Hi wenzi_lee
Do you have 'hal' in the Daemons array in rc.conf.
If not .. try that and see if it works.
Rgds,

I've got the same problem too.
I looked at my personal directory and no .kde4 directory was created. I think kdm couldn't start the desktop because he was not able to create the necessary config files, but i don't know why. I have checked my write permissions and are right.
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot!

could you show me please, the output of ls -la ~/.*authority
I had once ago a bug with it - kdm was sending me to kde4 but kde4 was not loading correctly.

Install both hal and fam (pacman -S hal fam) and add them both to the daemons list before kdm (and not backgrounded, to be sure). That made it work for me when I had the exact same issue. It seems you already added hal, but I can't know whether or not you've done something silly there (like forgot to install it, if it wasn't installed as a dependency already ) since you seem to be new to the forums, so I'm just specifying to be sure
as for .kde4, it is created the first time you successfully load into kde4 if i'm not mistaken (which is one reason why the first login takes so long).

Hello again.
That doesn't work for me! I have already installed hal and fam, but kdm still doesn't log me in kde4.
I ran "startx" from my user prompt, and i can use kde now, but when I ran kdm as root, I can log in.
quarkup, here is the output.
[~]$ ls -la .*authority
-rw------- 1 juan users 54 Feb 7 17:31 .Xauthority
I supposed that i have to configure kdm, i was looking for more information when i saw this post.

that's ok..
the .ICEauthority was the file which needed a chown/chmod to let me go into kde.. but it's ok i guess, since you don't have it.
mine is somehow like this:
~$ ls -la .*authority
-rw-rw---- 1 quarkup quarkup 64K Fev 2 13:20 .ICEauthority
-rw------- 1 quarkup root 1,4K Fev 7 21:55 .Xauthority
> KDM must be configured to allow the "root" user to access the X11 session - in: systemsettings > Login Manager > Users(6) (root account has the uid=0)
hope it helps you.
I don't really use the root account for anything, only the very necessary stuff..

I've tried all these tricks, but I still can't get kdm working. Both hal and fam are in the daemons list and are running. My .Xauthority and .ICEauthority files are set to the same permissions and ownerships as quarkup's, and the only thing I see about root in Login Manager is the checkbox in the "Excluded Users" list, which is unchecked. Any other ideas on what might be causing this for me?

What do you mean by kdm not working? All kdm does is lets you choose a session. Does it work when manually starting kde? If not give us the error and xorg log if its xorg related. The .Xauthority etc permission problems are caused by starting X as root i think, which you should never do.

check your /var/log/daemons.log it might say something about policykit. I've been having loads of problems with KDM myself.
still trying to get it to actually log me into a kde session.

When I try to log into any session with kdm, I simply get a blank screen and it dumps me right back into kdm. Using startx works fine.
daemon.log has the following lines repeated many times
Feb 7 19:19:37 dell kdm_greet[16873]: Cannot open default user face
Feb 7 19:19:53 dell kdm: :0[16870]: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: The permission of the setuid helper is not correct
Feb 7 19:19:53 dell kdm: :0[16870]: Client start failed
Feb 7 19:19:53 dell kdm: :0[16870]: Cannot close ConsoleKit session: Unable to close session: no session open
I notice that another thread is reporting the same error messages, http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62554
