booting from cd results in grub

hi,

i just downloaded three different image files for a archlinux installation on my acer laptop with xp2000+ cpu. however, all boot attempts (from cd) just throw me directly to a grub shell, where i dont really know how to continue.
so.... how to install arch? smile

The instructions on how to get started are printed on screen when the CD starts. Also, the excellent Beginner's Guide ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide ) has the information also. The link above will let you know how to use the guide during installation.

Re: booting from cd results in grub

he said it's a grub shell - which would be unusual.

are you sure its not a normal bash shell? or tried on some other pc?

Well actually I did too. I tried to download the FTP install.

The live CD boots towards grub stage2. It did this with two different systems.

Re: booting from cd results in grub

I apologize if I'm getting something wrong here. It's been a long time since I've looked at an Arch install CD, but if I remember correctly, there's different options. One is for repair, and one is for install. Is this is happening with the install option?

Re: booting from cd results in grub

Well, no apologies necessary smile.

What happens is from the ftp iso, after booting from the CD, I get directly to a grub shell on stage two. From there, I can see what partitions I have on my hide drive :

/boot -- root(hd0,0) ext2fs
Win -- root(hd0,1) 0x5
Ubuntu -- root(hd0,2) 0x7

But I assume I should be loading on the CD so I can boot the kernel from the CD-rom correct? Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to do that, and I don't know much about grub. At worst, I'll just do like the OP, take the core version of the CD and continue the installation.

Thanks!

Re: booting from cd results in grub

Alright, I did in grub stage 2 :

- root(cd)
- kernel /boot/vmlinuz26

And it then gave me : Error 25 : Disk read error. So either the image is corrupted or my disk has a problem with it.. I guess.

Seems strange but guess I'll move on to the core install.

Thanks for your help.
