I have kde 4.2, but the upgrade hasn't changed the problem I was having. My system tray icons are wrong or don't show up at all. The "space" is there (like for volume, etc.) and I can click on it to launch the application, but he icon is just... blank. Before the upgrade, the icons would just be wrong (they'd all be the same, but they were all wrong); now they're just colored squares. Right after I installed Arch it worked briefly, but stopped for some reason a little while after and it's persisted. Any suggestions?

try adding a single plasma for your icons(not in a panel), this worked for me to get them working correctly

I fixed most of my problems by completely redoing my plasma config. Under .kde4/share/config there are two files: plasma-appletsrc and plasmarc. Exit KDE, move those out of the way and log back in. That'll set you up with the default config and you can modify it from there. If that doesn't work, you can just move your old configs back.

Adding the plasma worked, but I wish it would work in a panel since it looks cleaner on the desktop. I had it working for all of 30 seconds on a top panel I created just to give it a try, but that failed when I tried to move it. Removing the files and letting it repopulate them didn't seem to change much. Thanks for the suggestions! I guess I can live with the widget on my desktop for now.

Plasma still has some teething problems. It kept crashing on me when I was setting up my dual monitor setup the first time. I kept having to blow away the plasmarc and plasma-appletsrc and retry all of the steps in different orders to get everything to look right. Eventually I got it to work.
It's waybetter than it was 6 months ago, though. It's getting way better faster than I thought it would.
