Hi all,
My name is Dadster. I am co-founder of Linux Graphics Users forum. I want to announce we have added a section just for kids. A place to teach the next generation the basics of Linux graphics software. It's geared toward kids ages up to 16. We call it Kidz Korner and it will be heavily moderated to keep it a safe place to hang out. We're aiming to make this a fun place. So if you have kids at home that are starting to get into Linux then this could be someplace you may want to steer them.
Thanks, Dadster

Hi Dadster,
That's a good idea, but as it aims to be educational I would have gone with a different name. The intentional "kool" misspelling feels clichéd and anti-intellectual.
That's just my opinion though, not really criticism. Good luck with this and the rest of your forum.

Thanks Xyne for the well wishes and the not really criticism. But I'm not too concerned that 6,7 and 8 year old kids would take the intentional misspelling "kool" as anti-intellectual. I was kinda hoping to set a trend and they would all start to misspell the word "cool" I mean "kool"

I have too agree with Xyne. When I was a kid (9-14) Which is about the right age for your forum (I think) I was deterred by 'kool', 'kidz', or any other misspelling. I would not have gone to that forum just because of the name. If you named it something like 'Beginner's graphics forum' or something that sounds very 'adult-ish' it would have attracted me more. I'm not saying you use that name, but you get the idea.

LGU sounds like a great project; I wish I had been able to get involved in something like it that when I was 9
May LGU become very successful and may you teach 9/10 year-olds everywhere how to become Gimp gurus!

Lexion I know I should let this roll off my back. I came to your forum with the best of intentions to offer a place for kids to have fun with graphics art. You and Xyne offer elitist criticism disguised as semi-friendly suggestions.
...
I won't judge ArchLinux by the comments of a few members. I've used Arch and it's a great distro. Thanks, Dadster
Perhaps I should have gone into more detail but I didn't want to derail the thread with a wordy reply about something that's ultimately trivial (the name). I honestly think your forum overall is a good idea from what I've seen and that the kids section has a lot of potential. I only posted my comment because I honestly rolled my eyes when I read the name and I think it detracts from it. No, the name isn't a real issue and I said as much (while emphasizing that it was only my opinion), but I honestly think it highlights a generational gap. Some kids just cringe at their parents trying to use language which they think will appeal to them.
Why do you take a "good idea, but I wouldn't have picked that name" comment as elitist? It's like being offended by someone telling you that your suit looks good but the tie doesn't match. There's really no need to be hypersensitive about it, especially if you've received (due) praise across several forums. If you can't handle anything but capslocked approval of your efforts without even the slightest negative remark then perhaps you need to lighten up.
I'm glad that you recognize that no individual here is a representative or Arch Linux but the comment itself was unnecessary. A distro and its user base are two different things.
Anyway, I sincerely wish you the best of luck and I'm sorry that my reply bothered you so much.

When someone walks into a room full of people he doesn't know and says "Check out my suit!", it's not impolite to express an opinion, especially if it's a constructive one.
Anyway, I've bookmarked LGU with the intention of following it for a while to see how and where it goes.

I'm sorry if my criticism was too harsh, and I hope that I have not reflected poorly on the community. Sorry about that.

I'm afraid I do tend to agree with Xyne and Lexion... I'm only one year over your target audience and would find that a tad patronising. I mean for something like 7-10 year olds perhaps. 16 year olds can get married and they are hardly 'kids', but bleh. Otherwise, it's a nice idea and good luck with it. I'll keep an eye on it
