Actually, before I'd vote here, I'd like anyone who has at least _some_ clue to confirm that ALSA supports an amount of soundcards comparable to OSS. If ALSA only works with half of what's available, it's too early to adopt it, IMO.

Anyone with an ALSA-clue around?

And the list of OSS cards can be found on http://www.linux.org.uk/OSS/ so we can compare. Unfortunately the page talks about Linux 2.2.17 but OTOH also about 2.5.X as the development version.
