[SOLVED] xorg.conf with 'hwd -xa' on sony viao not working

Hello,
I have a Sony viao VGN-T150P running Arch linux and I can't get my x.org working sad.

here are some of information I get:

lspci says

so then I installed xf86-video-intel,

using that driver with a blank xorg.conf , I get 3 terminal windows and xclock,  but my mouse and keyboard don't seem to do anything

here are those errors:

Re: [SOLVED] xorg.conf with 'hwd -xa' on sony viao not working

What you need to do is this:

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

That will narrow down your log file to what you need to know - the errors. For the moment, the rest is redundant and only makes for a difficult read wink.

I see in your log an error about a 'record' module not being able to load so you might want to check your config on that.

Re: [SOLVED] xorg.conf with 'hwd -xa' on sony viao not working

OK, thanks for the quick reply 'B'

I've never heard of 'record' but anyway,

Here are the grep'd files smile

using no xorg.conf file:

Current Operating System: Linux myhost 2.6.25-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jun 14 18:07:19 CEST 2008 i686
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

using hwd -xa generated file:

Current Operating System: Linux myhost 2.6.25-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jun 14 18:07:19 CEST 2008 i686
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "record" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No devices detected.

are fdbdev type1 and record some kind of program, I looked  fbdev on wikipeida  but it didn't make very much sense, is it included in x.org by default or something?

Thanks smile

Re: [SOLVED] xorg.conf with 'hwd -xa' on sony viao not working

Fbdev looks like a driver to me, framebuffer related (not sure it's a driver though). Type1 has to do with fonts. You did install fonts right?

Try commenting out

    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"

and

    Load "record"

and see if that gets you any further.

You might wanna try running

X -configure

to get yet another Xorg.conf to test with, and see what that gives you smile.

in xorg.conf "Section Device", the Driver should be "intel"

Section "Device"

jsh33, if "intel" works, post here the output of "lspci -nn" to update the xorgtable in hwd.

Re: [SOLVED] xorg.conf with 'hwd -xa' on sony viao not working

I download xf86-video-fbdev just for fun smile before I saw your post, I didn't do anything as far as I could see.
I commented these lines out:

FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
Load "record"
Load "type1"

B, I didn't install any fonts but now I installed a buch of random fonts:

pacman -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-cheapskate artwiz-fonts xorg-fonts-75dpi xorg-fonts-100dpi

and did some of what the X.org configuration wiki said:

fc-cache -fv
/usr/bin/fc-cache
/usr/bin/mkfontscale
/usr/bin/mkfontdir
ln -s /usr/share/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir encodings.dir

Then this I changed this:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "intel"
    VendorName "All"
    BoardName "All"
EndSection

EDIT, halfway through this post I realized I type in biagio's code wrong, I re-typed it and now my X works! big_smile
Thanks Everybody for the help! big_smile, here's the working xorg.conf for reference:

For my information, when you run "lspci -nn" does the deviceid and vendorid show [8086:3582] for your "VGA compatible controller"??

Re: [SOLVED] xorg.conf with 'hwd -xa' on sony viao not working

Thanks. I have updated the xorgtable. Run "hwd -u", and do a test: "hwd -s". Its supposed to show: "Driver: xf86-video-intel" instead of "i810".
