you could you ghostscript, as in:

gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=finished.pdf file1.pdf file2.pdf

copy to abiword then save with as a pdf extension

I know that you have solved this but there is some other options to, if you don't mind java there is also pdfsam which can both split and merge pdf-files. Ii's in the aur.

thanks! this did my 600+ pages and their ocr-layer in under 5 seconds. thank you so much for adding this information here.
