Hi All,
This is a clean install. X starts fine as root but will not start as regular user. No error messages that I can see.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.

What happens when it doesn't "start fine"? Black screen? Wrong resolution? Just goes back to the console?

Hi,
Just goes back to console. It says there is no "Type 1" and no "record" but when I comment them out in xorg.conf x still doesn't start (just goes back to console) but produces no error messages. As root with these things uncommented all is fine and there is no problem with no "Type 1" and no "record".
Thanks!

Running X as root is a bad idea, and it's easily preventable because, well, you just never need to do it. You've probably borked your permissions somewhere by doing it.

What (if anything) is in your regular users ~/.xinitrc?

your user is in group video i hope?
He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

I've had a similar problem too. I messed around with it for ages trying all sorts of perfectly working xorg.conf files and making sure groups were set up, but always had the same problem. The only workaround I've found so far is that if you use a GUI login tool it seems to work just fine.
I've only used KDM so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if other gui logins work just as well. Still, there is something very confusing about this issue and it'd be nice to figure out what is the cause rather than just working around it.

Hi All,
I am in the users, audio, video and optical group. The permissions were not messed up by logging in as root. The problem existed before I logged in as root. I logged in as root just to test x.
~/.xinitrc has:
exec startfluxbox
I've done at least 25 archlinux installs and I've never run into this before. I reinstalled exactly the same way via ftp and the problem is now fixed. I wish that I knew what caused it but for now it will remain a mystery. Thanks to all for the replies.
