[SEMI-SOLVED] ALC885 does give me constant headache...

For every kernel upgrade it's recognized as something else than it is: ALC882, ALC889 and now ALC889a, but never as ALC885 as it should. Overall it works OK except for the microphone which is useless. No mixer settings does anything.

If someone has a similar chip and knows a good fix for this I would appreciate the help.

if alsaconf does not work for you, try adding /etc/modprobe.d/sound a specifized option.

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

model=auto refers to the BIOS. What kind of computer do you have? If you have acer, could work with model=acer etc.

I presume that you use snd-hda-intel driver, if not there are other model options for various cards.

Isn't model=auto the default setting?

Re: [SEMI-SOLVED] ALC885 does give me constant headache...

Thanks for the help. I have to probably test all kinds of configurations because so far no success.

The computer in question is built from parts and the "perpetrator" is a DFI Lanparty 790GX-M2RS. Since it's not a notebook 6stack-dig should be the one but I don't know why my attempts so far have failed. Maybe I once in while continue to test some new approach and keep you posted whenever I figure it out.

Everything works except for capture, something I usually don't need anyway. If needed it's for IP telephony and then I can easily use the built in microphone of the web-cam. For more "serious" listening I'm using a USB-DAC (Trends UD-10.1). Nevertheless it would be nice to figure this one out.

Re: [SEMI-SOLVED] ALC885 does give me constant headache...

Update:

Recent updates have corrected... or got it to work... the issue. Still it looks odd because depending on how I check it the onboard sound-card is recognized as either ALC885, which is correct, or ALC889A.

Some settings became visible in amixer only with recent updates, and hence I could enable capture in a way that work. Nevertheless I have three instances of capture and likewise three instances of choosing source, so I wouldn't say it looks great. I'm happy though that it at least work well.
