Fast machine-Hangs during certain tasks

To begin with I have Core2Quad with 5gb of ram and I am running ArchLinux64. The problem is whenever I do certain cpu intensive tasks like unrar a huge file or converting movies via devede(well only on the step that makes a iso), everything hangs a little bit especially firefox. Anybody got a logical reason why this happens? Also, the cpu usage does not seem to go that high (reading via gkrellm) and I have a ton of memory. So why the hanging? Also, I have a very good heatsink so its not that. My cpu temps never go above 100 F and usually stay at 89 F. So its not overheating.

Thanks

Re: Fast machine-Hangs during certain tasks

I think it has something to do with I/O scheduler.  That happens on my machine whenever lots of I/O activity is going on, especially during copying, writing large files, etc.  And it happens on just about every machine I've ran Linux under.
