Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

I've made an article to get Archlinux running on a Dell Inspiron 1525: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_Inspiron_1525

Any comments would be great, I think there is stuff missing but don't know what. :D

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

I own such notebook and I'd love to contribute to your wiki page! Great job!
I'll add shortly an oss section, and I think I saw how to get dual jack working with alsa from gentoo's wiki...

sounds great, wake up this forum thread when you do find the solution for the dual jack.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

Ah, no solution to the problem... I think I saw something in the gentoo wiki long ago that said: "model=dualjack" in /etc/modprobe.conf, however I don't see it anymore and it probably won't work (well... doesn't hurt to try it, does it?)
I'm going to add hardware variations to the wiki (Broadcom BCM 4312 wi-fi card, nvidia GeForce 8400M video card).

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

I was hoping someone would add some hardware variations, because I have kinda the standard one.

Here's updated wiki. See it, I added quite a few things... At hardware variations there's something wrong with the numbering (here) Could you fix it for me since I suck at wiki coding...

Thank you very much - it's great to have some more Arch-orientated information on this laptop. big_smile
I got myself a 1525 a month ago and now have it running nicely with Arch + Openbox.
The only lingering problems I have are:
- hsfmodem caused me hideous sound problems and wanted to revert me to OSS rather than ALSA
- Cheese (latest) doesn't record video on my webcam, but still photos are okay

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

I don't have a webcam, but Dheart said something about adding a webcam section.
Afterwards check out what's not on there, and contribute your working stuff too.

edit: I've included Dheart's 'hwd -s' and added stuff to start the sound deamons.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

It would seem that webcam comes only with the 1525 n model (like mine)

EDIT:
I also have bluetooth, don't know if it should be added to the wiki (works out of the box.)

Maybe add Bluetooth to the list of working things.
Webcams also come with models without the n, my father has one like these.

Nice.  I have one of these as a secondary laptop but as I do not use it often I have never bothered to get the sound or webcam working.  Booking marking the wiki page for when I next use it.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

Hi! I found how to enable the external microfone and dual output jack with alsa, in order to do it you will have to add this line to /etc/modprobe.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-bios

After doing that you have to restart alsa (or the notebook) and it will be working.

My hardware specs:

HARDWARE DETECT ver 5.4.2 (simple mode)

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

Hello.

I have low fps with games in 3D. I can play at good fps in the Ubuntu that I have in my other partition, so I tried to put my Arch's xorg.conf in Ubuntu, but Ubuntu still works even with that configuration.

I use the intel Graphic Card ("GM965/GL96) of the Inspiron 1525 and I was wondering if someone had the same problem.

The xorg.conf is:

PS: Kwin4 and Compiz works perfectecly and I have my direct rendering configured (or I think so, right now I don't know what to think).
PS2: Why the "hwd -s" of Dheart says that he uses Xorg and the one of Rainbyte says that he uses Xfree86? I wonder why because when I execute "hwd -s" in the Ubuntu system it says Xfree86, but Xorg in Arch.

Well. I'm hope that somebody understood my english and make a better article for the wiki.

Poor 3D performance is fixed with this update, however you'll have to wait for it to hit the repos...

Hi! I found how to enable the external microfone and dual output jack with alsa, in order to do it you will have to add this line to /etc/modprobe.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-bios

After doing that you have to restart alsa (or the notebook) and it will be working.

My hardware specs:

I'll definitly try this out next week. If it really works, then I'll put it on the wiki.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

I've tested above solution: both outputs work, but it ends up with zero-volume bug: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Del … al_Hiccups
This makes me change the model, so it wont work.
If it works with you, can you give me the version of your Alsa?

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

Hi again! I dont have the problem that you mention now. I think I had the zero/volume bug with other model, I just dont remember exactly with what model.

With the option that I have posted all is working ok for me. I have the alsa version shipped with 2.6.28 kernel (which is in the official repos). I am not near the machine now, but if I remember well is version 1.0.18rc3. I will check it later.

EDIT=Yes, I was right... "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.18rc3" and all is working as expected, but it is strange that the "Headphone" mixer's control doesn't manage the volume of the 2nd output, instead the "Surround" control does it... Well, anyways it's working ok, the name isn't really important...

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

I'll be checking that version out in the near future.. I'm just using alsa 1.0.18 from the arch repo, so it should be working too. I could also check the nightly, that helped me in the past with other problems.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 wiki article

HI! I would also add also an advertence for users who have GEM working and try to use the framebuffer, which can cause the system to be unstable.

This could be useful because kernel modesetting will not be enabled before kernel 2.6.29 or 2.6.30 are out

Hi! I'm talking about the new memory manager for the gfx card... I

It was introduced with kernel 2.6.28 and it is being used with new versions of mesa and Intel drivers.

There are many new features coming with the new versions of xorg and mesa...

I don't experience something unstable with the newest intel drivers from AUR if that is what you mean, just waiting to use the intel driver from Extra again but that one is out-of-date. We could add something about these new drivers in AUR.

These are my packages for intel gfx card
extra/intel-dri 7.2-2
Mesa DRI drivers for Intel chipsets
local/xf86-video-intel-newest 2.6.1-2 (xorg-video-drivers)
     X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers

The graphics are way better, but that is for another topic. :-)

If I'm wrong, could you give me a link for more information. I'm interested in anything that makes my graphics smoother
