No internet connection after upgrade

I ran "pacman -Syu" and answered yes to replacing "atl2" and "wlan-ng26" with "core/kernel26". After rebooting, eth0 times out and I get no connection to my DSL modem.

I tried "dhcpcd -d 10.0.0.138" (the modem's address) and got this:
10.0.0.138:dhcpcd 4.0.7 starting
10.0.0.138:read_interface: No such device

This is on my AMD Athlon64 box. I just upgraded another box with Arch 32-bit (the one I am writing this from...) and had no problems, but there I was not asked whether any files should be replaced. The two boxen use the same DSL modem.

From what I understand, the atl2 ethernet driver is now included in the kernel.
Must I load a special module?

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

I notice in /var/log/messages.log:

X:2576 conflicting memory types e0000000-f0000000 write-combining<->uncached-minus
reserve_memtype failed 0xe0000000-0xf0000000, track write-combining, req write-combining

This is repeated 3 times and did not happen with kernel 2.6.27 or earlier.

Don't know if this has anything to do with the ethernet driver not being loaded, or whatever.

I would really appreciate if anyone has a suggestion as to how I might start and/or test the ethernet driver.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

Just tested the Fallback kernel.

DHCP works. No memory error messages.

I don't know the differences between the Standard and Fallback kernels, but something is wrong with the Standard kernel on my system.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

In my case I cant connect even with the Fallback kernel.

When booting I get this error too:
Fatal: module wl not found

(I use Wicd)

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

I was able to connect using "dhcpcd eth0".
But somethings still dont work... like an applet that pings many sites or Wicd.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

With so many things appearing to be out of whack with this kernel revision, let's hope for an improved one shortly.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

1. Check what driver you need on http://www.linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers
2. sudo modprobe driver_name

BTW I noticed that hwdetect --modules missed my wireless drivers (iwlwifi) with the new kernel.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

i have the BCM4328 so its not supported in the included modules.  i still rely on broadcom-wl, with the new kernel update i am also getting

FATAL: Module wl not found

are there any options besides ndswrapper?

EDIT: The fallback kernel doesnt help me either. Seriously frustrating.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

fixed it!

i read up that ssb has been been conflicting with other modules, especially ndiswrapper, so i did a:

sudo rmmod ssb
sudo modprobe wl

and it all worked out...editing my rc.conf modules to

!ssb wl

fixed things.  back online!

EDIT: what do i lose by blacklisting ssb?

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

bummer.  i still had to keep it blacklisted even after the broadcom-wl update today.

i have no other ideas, sorry. im running the BCM4328.  maybe you have a different card.

type lspci in console to find out.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

After upgrading to kernel26-2.6.28.1-1 I still cannot connect to my DSL modem (DHCP) using the Default kernel. The Fallback kernel lets me connect normally. This is on an AMD Athlon 64 box with a Marvell ethernet card (module: sky2).

Regarding kernel modules, I notice some strange error messages. This is the end of /var/log/messages.log for the Default kernel:

Apart from the strange listing of invalid kernel modules in both kernels, the Default kernel also shows memory allocation errors.

I would really like to get my Default kernel working. Can anyone throw some light these messages?

I updated to the last kernel yesterday. Now I don't get the wl error. But Wicd still doesn't work and I still need to conect manually.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

I had this problem too, after an upgrade, no connection. Running pppd it complained about a missing libpcap 9 something. And sure enough, there it was in pacman log ;
[2009-01-17 23:26] upgraded libpcap (0.9.8-2 -> 1.0.0-1)
So i made a symlink and i had pppoe back.

Re: No internet connection after upgrade

It is working for me now.
Following this thread helped me:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=482706

Looks like Wicd was crashing because the wl module was missing.
