Recently we see lot of us having problems associated with hal and dbus and we see lots of posts regarding those. But most of us dont have a clear idea about how to trouble shoot these issues (including me ) . So i am thinking of making a wiki page for troubleshooting such issues.
The page will have brief idea about what hal/dbus etc are, how they help in automounting, device detection etc, how to manage permissions, what various kits(console kit, policy kit etc) are and what is their purpose(and how we can avoid using them ). And basically where to look when we have trouble.
Please share any good resources/links that you have come across regarding these.... and share any ideas you have.....
PS: Warm regards to the "Arch Forum community improvement team ". You guys are doing a great job teaching everybody to google

Hi,
I have mount problem too, so i see that console-kit-daemon is running, and look in it.
Ater inspectinf PolicyKit with polkit-gnome-authorization, i see there is a block that talk about HAL and mount removable drive/eject.
So i try in root :
polkit-auth --user <myuser> --grant org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable
and same for eject :
polkit-auth --user <myuser> --grant org.freedesktop.hal.storage.eject
But it's not better, but with my user if i run polkit-auth i can see twice auth that i enter before.
PolicyKit don't have much log to help define where it blocks.

Hiya, I have the same concern with you. I'm reading hal and dbus specification documents and some other materials such as how to write udev rules, if you want, we can exchange our knowledge and findings, feel free to mail me.
I'm also glad to help write a wiki page regarding these, with my best.

Hi, here are my collections:
http://www.mythic-beasts.com/~mark/random/hal/
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7744
http://pirataox.blogspot.com/2006/08/un … -udev.html
http://reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html
But most useful parts of course are DBUS and HAL homepages:
http://dbus.freedesktop.org
http://hal.freedesktop.org
Carefully read through specification document of them gives a good overview.
