Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

My second linux distro of choice, Debian, has just released Debian 5.0 (Lenny). I have been runing a couple of Lenny servers for a month or two now with no problems. Check it out at debian.org

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

Debian Sid(unstable) was my distro before Arch . I lived the Perl 5.10 upgrade , the python 2.5 upgrade and others .
When the developers were advised not to push risky upgrades to Sid because the packages will end up in Lenny I switched and I'm glad I did .

I wish the Debian guys good luck (If they need any) .

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

I've been using Debian Testing (Lenny) for months now on major production servers. It's solid.

I definitely prefer Arch on my desktop, though. I'm fine with slow releases for servers, but not on my everyday workstation.

It's not a fixed schedule.

haha. that made me laugh.

But i have no problem with them taking their time though. Will rather have things stable then bleeding edge for my server.

Yeah, know the feeling. I do pacman -Syu daily on my workstation and would feel uncomfortable not upgrading for any time longer than a couple of days, a week at the outside. With Debian though I can just do an apt-get update, apt-get upgrade once a week without having too many packages to install. Debian is a good distro but whenever I have tried it as a desktop I always end up having to install multiple applications from source to get the functionality I need. Seemed to defeat the purpose. It is great for servers though.

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

I like Debian Lenny, especially now that you can install LXDE by default. This will become my distro of choice for old computers where I want things to just work without messing with it (that's what Arch is for), or to recommend to people with old computers. Or my i586 lappy tongue

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

Debian rocks, always has. But they still insist on doing "releases". Releases suck big time sad

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

Staying in fixed releases and not going to rolling release gives server maintainers easier life.

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

I've been playing a some weeks with Lenny, but ran into so many problems trying to install Xfce that I gave up. Ex: gamin wasn't installed from the Xfce CD, I didn't get anti-aliased fonts in Conky, Conky overwrote normal windows when updating, Iceweasel components installed with the wrong permissions to name a few. Maybe it's me, but I feel Arch is more solid!

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

Yeah... if I ever grew too lazy or too busy to keep up with Arch/Slackware/Funtoo/*BSD, I'd switch to either Debian Sid or Sidux likely smile

Re: Debian 5.0 Lenny Released

sidux is very good. Before I went really into arch, it was the distro I used for the longest time.
