nm-applet in Openbox

I'm using Openbox with Pypanel and AWN, and I like it, but there's one problem.

Since this is a laptop, I use NetworkManager and nm-applet to manage my connections, and the background of the icons is not transparent:

I've tried finding the icon files and making the background transparent, but they are, so I suspect this is a GTK problem. So I looked at different themes, and found that with some other themes, it is transparent.

So I'm really asking if anyone knows what GTK setting changes that?

Also notice how Pidgin stays transparent everywhere, so I imagine this can be done at source level too, so if anybody knows of a patch to apply, tell me about that too.

Re: nm-applet in Openbox

This is basically a problem with nm-applet, but you can work around it by removing the panel background image (I forget what it's called) it ~/.themes/<theme name>.
