Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

No module in rc.conf everything gets autodetected so why have something there?
my xorg.conf is the same the wiki describes. The only thing I would advise you, don't try to open a video fullscreen while using desktop effects. big_smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

You should be able to do full screen video just fine. Just make sure you're using X11 output instead of Xv. It's still iffy on composited screens with ATI as of yet.

In the ati wiki it says to add fglrx to the module array in rc.conf, thats why I was asking.  Also, I have no idea what Xv is, so how would I set X11 output instead of it?

Well, everything went fine here, after doing the symlink. So I should say, this is safe to do. The only thing that annoys me now is everytime I launch an appliacation from terminal I get this:

Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".

Printed out 7 times. I have read it does no harm, but anyways is annoying to know it is there.

I don't think this is due to changes in fglrx.  I started getting this error after I updated the following packages...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

For some reason, my computer is looking in lib directories instead of lib64 directories for the drivers.  I ended up creating symbolic links for about a half dozen .so files before xstart stopped spitting errors, but now when I reboot or startx I get a blank screen and I lose control of the mouse and keyboard.  I've tried deleting the one file mentioned in an earlier post (amdpcsdb or something like that), but it didn't help.  I have the DRI section in my xorg.conf.  I've got one other thing I'm going to try tonight, but I have no idea if will help.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Oh, by the way, I've tried using pacman -S catalyst catalyst-utils, but the second I create an xorg.conf and use aticonfig, the very same errors I'm getting with the proprietary drivers show up.  Also, I'm doing all of this from a fresh install.

look at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_boot
just add "rm /etc/ati/amdpcdb"  before startx

if [[ -z "$DISPLAY" ]] && [[ $(tty) = /dev/vc/1 ]]; then
  startx
  logout
fi

Here's my catalyst RESTART fix:

Clear on shutdown:

rc.local.shutdown

rm /etc/ati/amdpcdb

Apply tvout settings again on KDE startup:
(systemsettings->startup)

aticonfig-tv.sh:

#!/bin/sh
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tv,positionX:158
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tv,positionY:10
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tv,sizeX:2491
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=tv,sizeY:555

Now im happy enough with catalyst cool
(2d and 3d performance is great, wine support could be better, composite works well enough and don't really care)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok, I know it must be getting annoying to see me keep posting about not being able to get the proprietary drivers installed and asking questions, but I'm determined because from some of the other stuff I've done, I really like archlinux.  For some reason, simple fixes that seem to work for others running Arch64 don't work for me on Arch64, and I have no idea why.  I've done several reinstalls of arch in the process, followed by complete updates, with the hope that having a relatively clean system would eliminate some potential problems.  But I just had an unusual thought, could the reason that the solutions are working for others and not me be related to the file system that I'm using?  My impression from reading the forums is that the majority of people here use ext3, but I'm using the xfs filesytem exlusively for all the directories, so is there a chance that it could be the problem?  Thanks

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I am not running xfs, and my 3870 is running good. But I did have to reinstall once during my initial install of arch because the beginners instructions were a little confusing to me. At this point did you install libgl or the catalyst drivers?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I've actually tried several ways at that point.  A couple of times I've installed libGL followed by opensource drivers, just so I could try out different window managers, and then I uninstalled them and tried to switch.  Other times I did pacman -S catalyst without doing the libGL install.  I've also just tried doing the proprietary drivers (which I would prefer over other options), but I've always done those in the following order: xorg, xf86-input-evdev, mesa , then the proprietary drivers (no pacman -S libGL at any point).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I think that libgl is a requirement of xorg, so you may not have noticed its install.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm at the point where I'm not getting errors, I managed eliminate the problem where the system was looking for files in the lib directory instead of the lib64 directory by adding "usr/lib64/xorg/modules" to the ModulePath in xorg.conf.

However, when I do startx, I just get a blank screen.  I can use ctrl-alt-backspace to get out of it though.  But if I try startx a second before rebooting, then I do lose the ability to use the keyboard during the blank screen.  I've got the DRI section in xorg.conf, and I've tried rm /etc/ati/amdpcdb, but I don't have that file, only amdpcsdb (which I've tried deleting just in case).

Looking through my Xorg log file, no errors show up, just some warnings.  As far as I can tell, most of them are harmless, but a few I have no idea what they mean, so I'm posting my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log with the hopes that someone will have a suggestion.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi, guys, have anyone had a problem that using catalyst drivers kdm hands at system boot time, certain times not all the time, just certain times. This happens using any evrsion of catalyst, meaning 8.12 or 9.1, and using Arch kde. When I installed Arch i686 on this same laptop, and kdemod4 with catalyst 9.1 I never experienced this hands at kdm statup on system boot. Using the radeonhd drivers I don't get this problem, but performance with those drivers on my integrated hd 3200 is very bad 2d and 3d wise.

The bad thing is having to force a shutdown to my laptop everytime this happens. Sicne the alt + sysreq + REISUB doesn't work.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

sold my 4870 and got an nvidia.
compiz and video playback actually work.

it's shocking that a $300 actually can play videos now! lol
couldn't be happier.

For those of you with desktops, and the ability to switch out ATI for nvidia, I'd recommend it.
is $50 really worth all this hassle?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have an NVIDIA, and while I like it now, come next year people will be switching the other way... NVIDIA's been having their share of driver problems (though not nearly as many as AMD), and AMD's going open source with xf86-video-radeonhd. Since it's supported by AMD, that driver will improve much faster (unfortunately for me) than the Nouveau driver for 3D NVIDIA.

I see version 9.2 is out now.  It black screens on my HD3100.

EDIT2: So, it installed fine, after modifying the PKGBUILDs for catalyst and catalyst-utils, but then it took a crap on my computer after booting up telling me it couldn't load fgrlx.ko because of an unknown symbol. sad I'm trying to track down the cause now. Here's the exact warning I get during compilation (which is reiterated in dmesg when trying to load the module):

WARNING: "flush_tlb_page" [/home/peter/.source/catalyst/src/archive_files/common/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/fglrx.ko] undefined!

Anyone know?

found a fix? I'm running into this as well now. the archive_files/common/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/firegl_public.c has changed a lot.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I installed catalyst 9.2 on my x86_64 machine.

The first problem I had was the flush_tlb_page problem.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi everyone, just my 2 cents...
as most of you I've been struggling with catalyst in the last times, with black screen on X exit and strange glitches on X restart.

What I've done is insert "sudo moprobe -r fglrx && modprobe fglrx" in /usr/bin/startx just before the xinit line, for me it works.

Of course I hat to edit sudoers so that for my user to modprobe no password was asked, I've a group admin so:
%users    ALL= NOPASSWD: /sbin/modprobe
in /etc/sudoers did the trick.

This is with catalyst 9.1 on a HD3650

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Just got catalyst 9.2 working on my arch64 :
With just the following steps:

1 - download from i686 (yeah I know) the svn entries for the catalyst-utils and catalyst packages:
Catalyst:
2.6.27.patch
PKGBUILD
catalyst.install
flush_tlb_page.patch  <- this one is the important patch without it it won't work (thanks hpestilence and andreas radke)

Catalyst-utils:
amdcccle.desktop
ati-powermode.sh.patch
atieventsd.sh
catalyst-utils.install
catalyst.sh

2 - first chmod +x all the files and then remove the md5sums from the PKGBUILDS
3 -  do a makepkg in the apropiate folders
4 - # pacman -U catalyst-utils-package and # pacman -U catalyst-package
5 - create  the /usr/lib64 directory and a symlink from ln -sf /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri /usr/lib64/dri

reboot.

This actually works.  Dude, you're a hero!
I got this working with KDM by writing the following to /usr/local/bin/reset-kdm:

#!/bin/bash
/etc/rc.d/kdm stop
sleep 3
modprobe -r fglrx
modprobe fglrx
/etc/rc.d/kdm start

Made that executable with chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/reset-kdm, then addded the following line to /usr/share/config/kdm/Xreset:

(/usr/local/bin/reset-kdm)&

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Oh cool I needed that for kdm.

Actually, I have a question. Does that line in sudoers still need to be added for modprobe?

EDIT: Just restarted my X session and it looks like it works without having to modify the sudoers file.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

hiya! remove fglrx module before X restart did resolve catalyst black screen problem! I've did experiment when with startx, next I need to do the trick to gdm.
