Minimising 3D application - Would this be possible?

Currently when I minimise a game, sometimes the game gets low FPS and I need to minimise/maximise it again and sometimes it reverts back to the normal fps, but sometimes not.

Is there any way of changing the behaviour of minimising for a certain application so that it keeps all the resources for the game and doesn't change the CPU time for that application. What I mean by this is to make the program behave like a maximised application when it is minimised. So when I minimise, it will still be like a normal maximised application.

Hope that made sense.

Some games have their own settings to reduce max fps when minimized/not focused. If you're experiencing this problem with only 1 game, check if it has such a setting and try to disable it. It might just be a bug that prevents it from recognizing when focus has been passed back to it.

What game is it, btw?

Re: Minimising 3D application - Would this be possible?

It's world of warcraft: wrath of the lich king running in wine 1.1.15/arch64 (bin32). This happens in fullscreen and windowed mode, I tried running it without vsync, different settings, running it with "nice -15 (-15- -19). It doesn't matter if I have it fullscreen on another workspace (which is actually quite cool) or minimise it in a window/fullscreen on my main workspace, as soon as it loses focus the fps drops. Sometimes when I maximise it, it goes back to 100% speed instantly, when it doesnt, I have to minimise/maximise it again or change workspaces. Sometimes it just doesn't gain focus at all when I'm unlucky.

I am running it in a different workspace now, I just want it to !never! lose focus under any circumstance.

Not sure if it helps with WoW, but try enabling wine virtual desktop in winecfg

I'd talk to the Wine devs about this (open a bug with Wine).

Does this happen with other Wine games? With native Linux games?

I downgraded to the stable nvidia drivers from the newest beta ones, I no longer get the slowdowns with the same in-game settings. Also, during the slowdown, the screen would tear. Maybe they are related?

Well beta is beta, at least the stable version works great. smile

Tell it on nvidia bug tracker or nvidia forums....

Yep, was going to do that. Only one problem, same thing is happening again. It was just a fluke, bah.

Also, another annoyance is that I have to run nvidia-settings, then the screen goes black and comes on again and then finally Vsync works with WoW.

Re: Minimising 3D application - Would this be possible?

I've experienced similiar thing on windows - it seems that NVidia have (or used to have) a problem with rendering to window, while still fast with fullscreen. I had a simple demo, and tested it on NVidia and ATI card. When using fullscreen, both cards get about 30 fps, but in windowed mode ATI still had 30fps, while nvidia dropped down to 15...

Funny thing wink
