Hang after exiting xorg and pressing alt+f7

Today installed arch linux i686. I've got xorg working with the intel driver. I can kill it, and return to the console where I typed 'startx', but I noticed that if I press alt+f7 in this situation the system hangs (or, at least, the keyboard is not responsive anymore). I tried with and without the framebuffer console: same behavior.

This does NOT happen in different situations. If I do not start xorg, I can press alt+f7 and then go away from there. If xorg is active, alt+f7 just brings me the graphical interface, as expected. After xorg is killed, no mode X-related processes are alive. I encounter this bug both with and without hald running. Weird: why is alt+f7 special, after xorg has beel killed?

I have a similar system installed (Debian, xorg 7.4, *same* kernel, same boot options, same xorg.conf). I tried with the intel driver version 2.3.2 and 2.6.1. I wasn't able to reproduce the problem there.

I don't know if this is related, but it seem that with arch linux I get some MTRR-related errors in Xorg.0.log, that I don't get in Debian.

This is really annoying.
I home you can help me in finding a solution.

Thank you!

Re: Hang after exiting xorg and pressing alt+f7

This is a major problem that is a combination of both Intel and X. There are various patches floating around within different distros, but all of the bug trackers that I've come across imply that the fixes work for some people and not for others. I've tried the version in the repos as well as the AUR package with major issues. On a machine that I'm working with that the i810 driver worked well on, the intel driver from the repos crashes frequently when logging out, shutting down, or changing tty. I've had no more success with the AUR version.

Some would blame Intel outright for this. I won't. I can't run the intel or vesa drivers with startx or slim. Both cases crash, and both only giving me the mtrr errors or complaining about pipe B. Nothing else in the logs. I can start both of them with GDM though.

Ok, so it's a known bug, not something strange that affects only arch linux or my system.
I'd happy to see what's the Debian patch that fixes this...
As far as you know, is there somebody that is actively digging into this (xorg or intel developers)?
I googled for the problem, but I failed to find any good source of information.

Thank you again.

I don't remember the exact errors, so I can't dig up the sites that I read. I found stuff at Debain, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, and Mandriva. Probably others. No one has patches that work of for everyone.

Re: Hang after exiting xorg and pressing alt+f7

I use nvidia drivers for my 9500gt and I am getting hang ups when I type startx.  The screen goes black for like 10 seconds, then lxde finally loads.  I just reinstalled with the new iso, but was having problems with rc2 also.  A few months ago, I used to press enter after startx and almost instantly, I was in lxde.
