Do things like Webmin and gnome-system-tools work?

Hi there,

The title says it all.  There are quite a number of generic system configuration GUI tools for *nix systems.  Most important in my opinion are Webmin, gnome-system-tools and the KDE Guidance tools.  All of these can configure sysinit, services, and network profiles.  Do these work with Arch, since it uses the rc.conf file and a much cleaner network profile system?

Thanks!

Most of them only partially works, but if you want gui config tools, then arch isn't really the distro for you. But do feel free to make modifications to the mentined apps so that they work with arch's configuration system.

Re: Do things like Webmin and gnome-system-tools work?

Hi again,

Could you elaborate a bit on what "partially works"?  Like gnome-system-tools for example, does the "Services" tool enable/disable services?  What about the "Users and Groups" tool?

Thanks for the reply!

Re: Do things like Webmin and gnome-system-tools work?

I don't use the Gnome tools, so this is only supposition...

Probably not.  I would think anything related to /etc/rc.conf will not be well supported by the Gnome tools, or other tools for that matter.

What about the "Users and Groups" tool?

User/Group management is pretty standard across distributions and other Unixes, so this would most likely work well.  Again, this likely applies to other tools.

Assuming things handled by rc.conf aren't well supported by these type of tools, have a look at your rc.conf file and at the wiki entry ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rc.conf ) to get an idea of what could be an issue.
