Installing a new ArchLinux system with XFCE

Hi. I'm an archlinux newbie.

I've had some experience with Ubuntu and I wanted to try out Arch Linux on my laptop. How to I install and setup a basic XFCE system and get XFCE to start at every boot?

OK. I had read some of those but not entirely understood them.

I think I might give this a go though.

By the way, if Ubuntu uses synaptic, is there a GUI version of pacman for archlinux?

gtkpacman, shaman (qt) just to name two of them.
all can be found in the AUR.

Then don't hesitate to ask if there is something you don't understand after reading or trying.  Give a try to pacman command lines.  You will not regret it.

Use the wiki begeners guide.  Once you install the basic system you have a choice of installing xfce.  the pacman comand line is very easy  all you have to do is sudo pacman -Sy (the package name).  if you google archlinux pacman you will find the wiki with instructions.

I would get gparted and repartition your hard drive so that you open some space to try new distros such as arch.  Remember you can only have 4 primary partitions so that your fourth partition should be an extended partition this will allow you to have more than four partitions.

The Beginners Guide will be a valuable resource for your first install. It comes as close to having everything you need as any piece of documentation I have ever used. Once you get the basic commands for using pacman you will find it similar and in some instances better than apt-get. I have not used a GUI pacman tool in the past but I hear good things about Shaman.
