im trying to get conky to draw the time on my desktop, but it is putting a black background behind the time!!

I think your wallpaper is set by compiz?!
Conky can not take this for it's backround, I had the same problem once. My solution was to set it additionally by feh, if I remember right.
(Or was it the other way? Did I replace feh with compiz-wallpaper? I'm not sure. Sorry, please try it.)
