Vuze crashes on startup

Hi guys,

when I start Vuze from the Kickoff menu the splashscreen appears and after the progressbar has reached 100 % I can briefly see the main window which then disappears and I'm back to my desktop.

When I start Vuze with Konsole, I get this:

schorsch@archie:~$ vuze

A bit offtopic: why's Vuze in German, if all my language settings (apart from number/unit settings) are set to English???!!! Evil application!

As always I'd appreciate any help.

Re: Vuze crashes on startup

hmmm, i tried to use vuze once! when it was known as azures! had exactly the same problem! never managed to get past the splash screen!
dont worry too much about this line;

Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0"

i get that for a few apps, n it doesnt effect them!
try googling bits of;

(SWT:6266): Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to allocate widget with width 250 and height -1
/usr/bin/vuze: line 188:  6266 Aborted                 ${JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR}java "${JAVA_ARGS}" -cp "${CLASSPATH}" -Djava.library.path="${PROGRAM_DIR}" -Dazureus.install.path="${PROGRAM_DIR}" -Dazureus.script="$0" $JAVA_PROPS $START_CLASS "$@"

id recommend using a "decent" torrent client though. if u like the large ones, then ktorrent (part of kde) or qbittorrent are very good, and do at very least, as many things as vuze does! i'd personnaly recomend transmission which has a gui, and ive herd good things about rtorrent which is cli, but u can get decent gui frontends for it!

Re: Vuze crashes on startup

Vuze is more than decent if you can bear the RAM and CPU hit, and switch to the old 2.5x interface. Transmission especially isn't a replacement for someone who likes Vuze - the latter has every feature in the book, while Transmission is very simple/spartan. Anyways, that's besides the point.

First, have you logged in/out since installing Vuze? If that doesn't fix it (just guessing since it installs in /opt), file a bug report. Oh, and try with both openjdk6 and jdk.
Wait, one other thing: Open /usr/bin/vuze in a text editor, and poke around, especially at line 188. Also look for JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR and verify that it is correct.

Re: Vuze crashes on startup

Okay, I quickly had a look through /usr/bin/vuze and things seem fine I even added "/opt/java" to line 52

JAVA_CHECK_DIRS="/usr/java/latest /usr/java /usr/lib/jvm/latest /usr/lib/jvm /opt/java"

However vuze still crashes. It does not crash if I do "kdesu vuze" from konsole. So I guess it's related to some file permissions (maybe the /usr/share/vuze). Any thoughts on that?

@Ranguvar: When you say "file a bug report", do you mean with Vuze or with Arch? If it's really a file permission issue it should be Arch I guess, but if it's not? I'm new to Linux World. So what's the "command chain"? Always file the bug with the distro first, before bugging the application developers?

Re: Vuze crashes on startup

Read my EDIT below first... x.x

*Usually* it's file first with the distro, and either they or you will go on to upstream if necessary.

1.) Did you try logging out/in? Vuze is installed in /opt, programs in there sometimes need to have $PATH refreshed. Do this before anything else.
2.) Try changing JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR="" in /usr/bin/vuze to where you have your (open)JDK installed. Make sure to have a trailing slash. See below.
3.) Try with and without messing with JAVA_CHECK_DIRS as you did. I don't think that's the problem.

Here's the line (split) that's giving us trouble:

${JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR}java "${JAVA_ARGS}" \
        -cp "${CLASSPATH}" \
        -Djava.library.path="${PROGRAM_DIR}" \
        -Dazureus.install.path="${PROGRAM_DIR}" \
        -Dazureus.script="$0" \
        $JAVA_PROPS \
        $START_CLASS "$@"

We have to make sure JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR is pointing to the directory where, right under, is the program 'java'. PROGRAM_DIR should be pointing to where most of the Vuze stuff is: /usr/share/vuze/ (or maybe without the trailing slash). Find this with the find command and pacman -Ql on your Java package.

EDIT: Too tired to change all the above... dammit, just saw that running as root fixes it for you tongue That simplifies things. Yes, that would be an Arch bug only. Try my suggestion #1 though, kdesu could solve this because you're basically running the command as root, which means using the refreshed $PATH (I think).

Re: Vuze crashes on startup

I logged off and on again. Things are still the same. So I shall file a bug report...

Thanks for your help, Ranguvar. I appreciate that.

Cheers,
Blackhole

// Edit: Erm, vuze is in the "community" package. What do I choose under "category"? is that an "upstream bug"? I'm not familiar with the whole ABS, AUR, thingummybob.

Re: Vuze crashes on startup

Nope, "upstream bug" would mean upstream (the Vuze people) are the cause of the bug. It's Arch packaging that's the problem.

File it in the Community Packages section.

Well, that's why I asked in the first place. There is no section for community packages. ;-)
I can choose among:

Packages: Core
Packages: Extra
Packages: Testing
Documentation
Website
Bugtracker
System
Kernel
Security
Upstream Bug

What shall I pick? Extra? Or System?

Huh?

http://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?pro … s&switch=1

Then log in and Add New Task.

Ah, I see, you were filing it under the Arch Linux _project_. File it under the Community Packages project, as linked above, and there is no Category to choose from.
