My freind has 1.5 years old installation of Arch (Don't Panic). Now he got internet at home, so what you people recommend ; upgrade or a new and fresh installation ?

Re: Upgrade or Reinstall ?

an upgrade would save from having to reconfigure everything, even though some things will surely break and have to be fixed

Re: Upgrade or Reinstall ?

did anything break ? if not why is he going to upgrade ? to get new versions ? to get rid of security ?
for sure re installation will be less problematic, but before I would backup /etc maybe /var
of course not touching /home
plus make a list of installed packages - anyway some of them changed names or disappeared

Things will break, that's for sure. It would make for a fun thread if there was another machine in the house that was connected to the Internet. Start up a thread with the time to begin, and let the community help work out the issues as they arise.

Re: Upgrade or Reinstall ?

He awats to upgrade because X is broken on his existing installation. From last 1 year, he did not even watch any video because X does not work. X had a bug on VIA driver, I solved it by upgrading my machine but I have net connection and I upgrade it almost everyday. He is doing it after 1 years as he did not have any net conenction.

Re: Upgrade or Reinstall ?

I'd also say to back-up settings and re-install.

Re: Upgrade or Reinstall ?

But trying the upgrade is so much more fun... big_smile

I'd try to update and fix issues when they arise, if things go to quirky while doing so I'd reinstall. But it depends how much time he has on his hands of course.

Re: Upgrade or Reinstall ?

I did an upgrade on a wombat install after a year or so of not upgrading and it wasn't worth it.
Too many things broke, I ended up getting it working fine but afterwards seemed like a huge waste of time
compared to backing up and reinstalling.
