Intel i915 screen resolution

Here's the problem: the resolution won't go higher than 1024x768 on my Dell D610.

I tried patching modes with i915 resolution (I read something about those being deprecated due to the new xorg), and changing the "Display" subsection under "Screen" section in xorg.conf:

SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
        Modes "1280x1024"
EndSubSection

With i915 resolution I patched few modes to 1280x1024 (desired resolution) but I don't have any idea where to go from there. Google says something about /etc/defaults/915resolution file, but it doesn't exist (I tried creating it but no success there either).

The thing is - even when I had windows xp, the resolution wouldn't go higher that 1024x768 there either. But i KNOW graphics card supports higher resolutions because I connected 1680x1050 external monitor to it and it worked fine. Could it be the limitation of the screen?

The xrandr output says:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 1024
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 285mm x 214mm
   1024x768 60.0*+ 50.3
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
TMDS-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1024x768 30.0
   800x600 30.0
   848x480 30.0
   640x480 30.0

here's my xorg.conf just in case: xorg.conf

thanks for any help.

Re: Intel i915 screen resolution

Most certainly screen limitations

SXGA+ maximum resolution of 1400x1050 pixels, 16.7 million colors (The D610 graphics chipset supports up to 1600x1200 pixels with external monitor, 16.7 million colors)
XGA maximum resolution of 1024x768 pixels, 16.7 million colors (The D610 graphics chipset supports up to 1600x1200 pixels with external monitor, 16.7 million colors)
Easy-to-see 14.1" XGA and SXGA+ active matrix (TFT) displays

The laptop buildin screen doesn't support higher resolutions.
