OK, i've been left without any WM/DE so life is a little bit hard...
Basically i updated the system, changed an option in gconf and changed an option in /etc/conf.d/alsa (to enable powersaving and avoiding to hear noise from the sound card on reboot) et voila'!
When i rebooted i had a problem with home/cape/.dmrc ... solved by deleting the file.
Than i had this message that was saying something obout insane configuration of gconf, and another message about problems with .ICEauthority.
Every time i tried to boot on gnome (failsafe or normal) it just get stuck ...i only have a mouse with nothing else...
And i noticed that every time that the sound card should produce a sound i get a static clik at high volume....
ahhahaa i'm scared...i'm tired and i feel cold ![]()

sometimes problems with your .ICEauthority happen because the ownership of the file is changed to root. If that's the case, you should change the ownership back to your user. I don't know about your other problems though...

yeeeeesssss!!!!
Did it.... sorry if i've been a little impulsive... is just that i always forget to not use root permissions when i'm totally drunk ![]()
(venice carnival yesterday nite...)
I fixed it by
sudo chmod 711 /home/
sudo chmod 700 -R /home/cape/
sudo chown cape:cape /home/cape/
sudo chmod 644 /home/cape/.dmrc
sudo chown cape:cape /home/cape/.dmrcplus deleted /home/cape/.Xauthority and /home/cape/.ICEauthority for a MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 problem
But still i don't understand why this is happening!
I've read somewhere that this can happen if you run certain gtk apps with sudo?
Can it be that i screwed up everything just because i ran
sudo gconfig-editorPS: Since i'm here... is there a way to make root programs look as normal user programs? (the same as ubuntu where appearance changes for both users and root)
Maybe symlinking selected files in /home/cape/.[whatever] /root/.[symlink to .whatever] ?
