Kind of embarrassing, but here goes:
I posted something on IRC archlinux and was told to register. I did and received an email back stating
In order to complete your registration, you must send the following command on IRC:
/msg NickServ VERIFY REGISTER xxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Whenever I do that #archlinux tells me:
[Notice] -NickServ- Please log in before attempting to verify your registration.
But how the @!#* do I login??? The wiki is not forthcoming with info either...
If this is some intelligence test I've failed big time. Gissa a hand and help me out, please!

In order to complete your registration, you must send the following command on IRC:
/msg NickServ VERIFY REGISTER xxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Do that on your #freenode window, not the #archlinux one - you are registering for freenode.

Cheers, I was doing it on #archlinux. So I closed konversation, started over and tried again on the freenode tab:
[10:40] [Notice] -NickServ- This nickname is registered. Please choose a different nickname, or identify via /msg NickServ identify <password>.
[10:40] [nickserv] identify xxxxxxxxxxxx
[10:40] [Notice] -NickServ- You are now identified for _toad_.
[10:40] [NickServ] VERIFY REGISTER toad xxxxxxxxxxx
[10:40] [Notice] -NickServ- Please log in before attempting to verify your registration.

Shame you edited your post as I welcome any serious mockery!
But toad was already taken and since konversation quite freely changes login names by adding underscores apparently at will I didn't think it mattered. So there.
Alright, I reckon I'll just try again and see what happens. Perhaps ircidiot would be a more apt name...

The edit was to remove a typo.
Anyway, since toad was taken, you can not try to confirm that nick.
/msg nickserv identify *******
/msg nickserv verify register ******** (or verify register _toad_ ********)
and _not_ /msg nickserv verify register toad ********
