abs and zlib not found in db (Solved)

I just reinstalled arch and am going thru the configuration and installation procedures. I want to install kde and went to the kde section of the beginners guide. I am supposed to
pacman -S zlib shared-mime-info
I get zlib package not found searching for group.. error: zlib : not found in sync db
I also wanted to get things ready for package building so I went to the wiki and am supposed to do pacman -S abs base-devel fakeroot
I get abs package not found searching for group.. error: abs: not found in sync db
so I did pacman -Syy pacman to make sure it was up to date and then I retried zlib and abs with the same results. am I missing a step?

Shut down konsole and researched pacman .  Then I started up konsole and redid pacman -Syy and everything came up..
