I like awesome wm but ....

I have been looking at awesome wm for a few days.  I like the way it works, but using lua is a pain.

Is there a similar wm with an easier to use configuration?

Thank you!

XMonad (uses Haskell) is probably your best bet, but I liked it less than Awesome... Awesome really is once you get used to it.

Re: I like awesome wm but ....

Believe it or not, it was harder for me to tweak XMonad than dwm. XMonad does use strange syntax (if you know anything like classic C or Pascal). There are great xmonad.hs examples but they are too different if you want to do small tweaks. It was pain for me to combine two of them and produce configuration that I liked and I did not understand haskell to write my own, had to use copy/paste. OTOH, XMonad is very stable and I enjoyed using it for a few months. Dwm was very easy to modify -- could be because I know C but I somehow suspect that it should be easy for anyone.

One tip for quick trying dwm: forget about merkurial and other fancy tools, extract dwm to your ~/dwm, modify config.h, do 'make' without setup or anyting and add exec ~/dwm/dwm to your .xinitrc
If you don't like it you can edit .xinitrc back and delete dwm directory, no garbage left around.

Gnome -> Openbox -> Awesome -> XMonad -> dwm .

Re: I like awesome wm but ....

awesome really is easy to use and configure once you take the time to figure it out

when i first installed awesome i have to admit that i was a bit intimidated by the config and what i read on the wiki, but once i stared using it and examining my config side by side with other peoples configs i learned how things work and now it all just  seems so easy

Re: I like awesome wm but ....

Well, I'm still intimidated by awesome config, so much that I'm afraid to update it - so far every update changed some of the config syntax and I had to spend another day or so trying to figure it out, and get someone else's config that works with that particular version.
But I still like *using* it.
