I tried to install cups by following the instructions in the wiki. I installed all the packages it told me to, added cups to the daemon startup list, added myself to lpadmin and set that as the administor group in cupsd.conf and it still doesnt work
Im using gnome-cups-manager. I managed to add my printer fine, but if i try to print, it just hangs there for like 5 minute and then it prints a page saying "failed to initialize the device. exiting" if i try to click the 'become administrator' button, it just hangs for a minute then throws an error saying it cant connect to gconf, something blocked the reply or you dont have tcp/ip support blah blah
it worked in ubuntu fine with teh same printer and laptop, so i know it works. Why can't i get it to work in arch?

have you tried localhost:631 instead? also, have you changed info level to debug in cupsd.conf? are you a member of the lp group?

i have followed all of the information in the wiki. All of the stuff your saying is confusing....What about localhost:631? what would changing the debug level do, and what line do i change to do it? do i NEED to add myself to the lp group? the wiki did not say anything about that....

Sorry, didn't mean to be confusing, but the debug level change is in the wiki. I even believe it is the first line or at least thereabouts. What good will it do? It'll show you the bottleneck (hopefully). You can look at the log in your browser by typing in localhost:631 (under administration/view error log).

Only to make it a bit clearer:
localhost:631
will call up the Cups Manager in your browser.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

By any chance do you have the testing repo enabled? I just discovered a bug between libcups 1.3.9 and coreutils 7.1.1.
