I've just downloaded a video from YouTube and I can't watch it. My desktop is KDE so my first option was Dragon, but it doesn't show the pictures: the sound is OK but the screen is black.
My other option was mplayer. Here I have both sound and pictures, but the pictures are very, very slow.
Any quick tips? Am I missing something? Thanks.

I know VLC can play that .... but it has a ton load of dependencies (codecs mostly I think).

smplayer is the best player...
Excuse my poor English.

mplayer should be able to do that without problems.
Did you use the right -vo device? Do you have a ~/.mplayer/config?

It certainly can. I had chosen the wrong video output driver (gl) on the GUI (gmplayer). Selecting xv made the difference.
Thanks a lot.
