Hi... getting WAY into command line / console/terminal etc.
So, I dodn't want the full mplayer...
AND, as a lot of us, including me has the KDE libs installed...
well, first I installed form yaourt mplayer-nogui-svn.... nice!
had some fun with the key comnmands... then though about a few things...
and took a look and found that smplayer is only a few meg I think it was with no other stuff needed on my dwm ruthlessly light 2009.02 fresh install...
Anyways... it's INCREDIBLE .... I mean.... really really for me, ALL of the options of the mplayer command line stuff seem to be IN the smplayer menus.... clean look, if a bit kde-ish hehehe
Looked for the thread where it was recommended as currently the best... couldn't find it...
So, anyways BIG thanks for the astonishingly good lead to smplayer....
if I find the thread (i looked) I'll be saying thanks AGAIN...
nice to not be installing the full pacman mplayer packages... you might wanna check out the mplayer-nogui-svn via yaourt which is fabulous as well. today I did a yaourt -Ss mplayer-nogui-svn and got really nice output letting me know that it was installed ...nicely highlighted.
also did a: yaourt -Qs mplayer-nogui-svn
and a: yaourt -Qi mplayer-nogui-svn
love it!
So.... for me those qt4 libs and some gtk2 libs do round things out for the best of what I need at this point...
cool!!!!!!!

Although I use kde, I never learned to like smplayer, so I countinued to use gmplayer.

interesting, I'll check it out..... thanks
Ideally I'd do everything via command line.... though ideally is a ways away...
I'd have to get to bash guru status I think, though I relaly love the whole less thing.

Everything except for DVD menu navigation, though this appears to be a shortcoming of mplayer and not smplayer.
Arch Linux + sway
Debian Testing + GNOME/sway
NetBSD 64-bit + Xfce

There's an ongoing discussion on Mplayer-dev that starts here:
http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mpl … 60605.html
in which the SMplayer developer discusses some of his issues with writing a front end for Mplayer. DVD navigation is one thing that he brings up.

Yes...
I use smplayer and mplayer-nogui-svn and is the best solution.
Excuse my poor English.

I prefer gmplayer for certain files, plays them much faster...

interesting comments and, nice on the link.
So, maybe it's late, or maybe I've been studying the wiki 'common apps' for hours now, or something.
I do like the GUIs though would certainly like to have some magic ability quicker for doing more stuff via command line. um, didn't I already mumble something like that... hehehe
going well though. and, nice to have the option... and it's SO easy to format and start again. 2009.02 ISO/IMG has been great!
:--)

When I was still using KDE, SMplayer was my front end of choice. It feels a little slow to me, but the configuration options and stability were always a huge plus. I don't have QT on this system, and am quite happy with gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer when I use a GUI. Although, gnome-mplayer can use a new name in my opinion considering that it has nothing to do with Gnome. I use FFplay more often than not when running non-DVD from the command line.
