unable to change display settings with xfce 4.6 utility

on launching startx, DE appears in (weird ) 640x350 configuration. when attempting to change to 1024x768, xfce4-settings-helper barfs (on vc1, issues 'Gtk-CRITICAL: gtk_widget_destroy: GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget) failed'). xfce forums mentions bug fix for xrandr 1.2 or 1.3, but damned if i can find the notice. that said, i can use xrandr -s 1024x768, but need to each time i startx. my xrandr version is 1.2 (libxrandr 1.2.3-1, randrproto 1.2.2-1). anyone knows what am i missing? thanks.

found notice:  xfce Bug 4966 -  [XRANDR 1.3] xfce4-display-settings do not apply changes.

Re: unable to change display settings with xfce 4.6 utility

Seems to happen if the monitor cannot be detected properly over dcc.

Try creating a xorg.conf with the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh values for your monitor.

Re: unable to change display settings with xfce 4.6 utility

tried suggestion to edit xorg.conf, using values from xrandr. didn't solve problem, after my morning chores, will be pouring over logs and forum listings (maybe an issue with graphics system, intel 82845g/gl), but seeking assistance.
