Anyone tried/using NixOS?

Someone pointed me to http://nixos.org yesterday.
It's quite radically different from most other distro's but it seems to do some cool things.
Unfortunately it errors when i type "loadkeys dvorak" on the installCD so my story ends there, but I was wondering if others had tried it.

Re: Anyone tried/using NixOS?

Wow, the concept sounds nice. Reminds me of GoboLinux a little. One thing I always disliked about most modern Linux distros is that you can't install packages with radically different version numbers on the same install easily because of dependancies. (On debian installing new packages is difficult, and on Arch installing old packages is difficult.) Having multiple versions of libraries would be awesome.

I don't think I'll try it anytime in the near future though, too lazy to install and configure an OS. I am a dvorak user too, so I might have the same problem as you.

Re: Anyone tried/using NixOS?

Okay, so it looked *really* easy to install ( http://nixos.org/releases/nixos/unstable/manual/ ): configure networking, make some filesystems and mount them, copy a template config to the right directory (this is the nice part: you have one config file containing the packages you want, how they should be configured etc) and run a command to install it.

But that command failed on me ( http://bugs.strategoxt.org/browse/NIXOS-76 ), then someone tried to help me and told me to do some commands, chroot into the new system, do some more commands etc, but I kept on getting problems so I decided I would stop messing with it. Maybe someday I'll try again.. For now the concepts still sound nice, but then again, a _simple_ system such as Arch does also have several advantages.

What means dvorak user?

It means we use the dvorak keyboard layout. It allows us to type faster then *erty users.

Re: Anyone tried/using NixOS?

I tried using it about half a year ago. Installed fine, even run some basic things in it. But the docs were badly missing. I don't exactly remember what was the thing I tried to do, (maybe some special kernel or grub config) but I couldn't win the fight over the syntax of config files. Eventually I gave up thinking that once it's a bit more polished, it might be extremely interesting to run.

Re: Anyone tried/using NixOS?

Now I tried using it on Virtualbox 2.1.4 using the first voice of grub don't run, while is ok using the second voice.

Probably the lack of documentation is due to the early stage of the project.
