I was wondering how I would be able to use VLC for playing quicktime content from for example apple.com/trailers. I've compiled vlc with the --enable-mozilla option but that doesn't seem to work. By the way playing any multimedia filetype on a webpage in vlc would be ok. Any suggestions?

Ok... installing the plugin was easy. Thanks. However, somehow apple.com/trailers won't fire it up when launching a HD trailer. Any ideas on how to fix this?

You're not alone. Some play, some don't (with vlc-plugin. mplayer doesn't play anything). At the moment my solution is to start up WinXP in VirtualBox, download the clip with quicktimealternative and then play it on my arch. Does anyone know a similar program for linux? I mean downloading the quicktime movies.

mplayer-plugin, gecko-mediaplayer, and totem-plugin all play Apple trailers quite handily.

My VLC plugins plays mov fine, for example: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/39162.html

With Firefox and Mplayer (the last two versions) you can't see the Apple trailers.
Firefox suddenly closes

The apple trailers are one of the few things a can't get to work in my Arch installation, really frustrating since it keeps getting me booting in Vista. I've tried all the suggested plugin but none give me the nice controls like quicktime player in windows (quicktime movies on gametrailers) and none will play the HD trailers on apple.com/trailers...:(

All Apple trailers work for me with gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer. I know of no exceptions. And in case anyone doesn't know, gecko-mediaplayer, or code based on it, is the replacement for mplayer-plugin.

For apple trailers, I finally have a solution: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2484
Works perfectly, even with HD trailers.

I suppose the download function is nice. The gecko-mediaplayer did the trick for me, once. It opened just once, but after that one time, everytime I click a HD link nothing happens .

With some Trailers i have the same problem. I'm using Opera with SMplayer. But not as plugin: Opera forward the url to the player.
The solution for this "special" trailers is: Open the HD-Trailer in a new tab (middle-click in Opera). I don't know if this also works in firefox.

After cleaning out all the plugins and associations (under applications) in firefox, I finally got this to work with the gnome-mplayer. Funny thing is, the association under applications in firefox says "quicktime plugin". I can finally watch my HD trailers from apple.com in Linux. One hard earned point for Arch. Solved

just curious but do you happen to know why mplayer-plugin won't work anymore (under opera)? it was perfect when 9.5 was released..I don't know of the progress thereafter until now as i was away from computers for some time.
i'd use it over the gecko one which depends on more things gnome and gtk.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.
