Openoffice randomly crashing X

I don't know whether this is related to Xorg, ATI drivers, openoffice or something else, but every few times I try to open a document with openoffice it crashes X and I get kicked back at the GDM login screen.

This is my xorg.conf:

I really don't know where the problem could be, so any advice will be appreciated

Re: Openoffice randomly crashing X

Update on the issue:
after reinstalling the whole system from scratch the problem is still there.
I've installed arch on another computer recently (a desktop) and there are no problems there, so I'm thinking it might be something with the hardware of this one (a laptop).
Also notice that the crashes occur both with and without compiz and both with or without a xorg.conf file (the latest xorg should allow this, right?).
Any ideas on what to try next?

Re: Openoffice randomly crashing X

I also have this problem. After upgrading much of my system, including openoffice, the X server crashes every time I start openoffice. It crashes when started from the command line, the menu, or the file browser.

I did not update xorg, still using 1.4 and am using the i810 driver.

I have tried:
adding  "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" to .bashrc
reinstalling openoffice

Re: Openoffice randomly crashing X

Update

Tried downgrading to openoffice 2.4 without success

Upgraded to xorg 1.5 and intel driver. Everything working now.

Re: Openoffice randomly crashing X

I think I might have solved the "crashing" issue by switching from the sun java runtime environment to the gcj one. Unfortunately Xorg is still randomly freezing (notice that these are freezes and not crashes anymore - no error in any log).

Which of these two do you think is responsible for solving the issue? I've got an updated xorg, but that's not helping. What's odd is that I've got another computer with arch installed (same exact installation, done 2 days later) and there are no problems there, so I'm thinking about some hardware/driver issue.

Re: Openoffice randomly crashing X

I've had that very same problem
Sometimes openoffice would totaly lock X
tried reinstalling 2.4 but no luck

After a lot of searching and googling I found go-openoffice
Installed it through aur, and openoffice didn't crash anymore

However, I didn't find the problem, but since go-oo still works nicely
I don't really have the need to figure it out.

Sorry about the late reply, I have not checked this post until now.

It could be either or both. The new xorg runs without a conf file, so it makes its own settings which, if there was anything wrong in the conf file, would correct the problem.  The intel driver was required for the upgrade of xorg. It might be responding differently to the calls of openoffice, which could also correct the problem.

Re: Openoffice randomly crashing X

This could be a gtk problem with openoffice (not sure -- it didn't crash X for me, just openoffice). In openoffice, select tools -> options -> general -> and check the box labelled 'Use openoffice.org dialogs'. Now click ok and restart openoffice. Now try to open a file and see if it still crashes for you.

Good luck!
