problem with graphical login

I just did a system upgrade after a couple of months. The system boots fine to kdm, but login fails, with nothing in .xsession-errors - I just get dumped back to the logon screen.

If I boot to run level 3, I can login and startx followed by startkde, or any other window manager with out a problem.

I created a clean test account, but same behaviour. Apart from KDE, I have xfce and window maker, so its not a KDE problem and not something in the .xsession file.

Any ideas?

Re: problem with graphical login

no ati radeon

in any case graphics settings are fine as I can startx from run level 3, no problem

I now also narrowed this to a kdm problem; if I switch to xdm, there is no problem

any ideas how to fix kdm?

Re: problem with graphical login

I get a very similar issue in GNOME. It keeps forgetting the language setting (it should be en_GB.utf8) and refuses to let me login. I keep having to reset the language back and forth between system default (en_GB.utf8 at build) and back again. I thought at first it might that damned hot-plugging thing (which has never worked for me), but I've tried both with and without the AutoAddDevices hack. Any ideas?
