KDE 4.2 Crashes

KDE 4, whether installed from the repos or using KDEmod, is unusable for me. KWin instantly crashes on startup, and while I can use Alt+F2 to bring up a run box, I can't do anything restore the desktop; it's just a black background no matter what I try. Xorg.log leaves no clues. What's going on?

Re: KDE 4.2 Crashes

Have you tried renaming you ~/.kde4 so that it gets created afresh?

Re: KDE 4.2 Crashes

Yes, I made sure to delete ~/.kde* before trying. Same result as always.

Re: KDE 4.2 Crashes

KWin would crash on startup when I first tried 4.2; I removed the line:

Option "BackingStore" "True"

from my xorg.conf and now KWin only crashes ~once a day or so. tongue

I don't know if this is the same problem, but it's worth a try.

Oddly, this worked. I would never in a million years have guessed that was causing problems. KDE 4.2 is very pretty smile Thank you!

Re: KDE 4.2 Crashes

Well, well, I'm glad for you both but I didn't had that chance: Didn't had that line on my xorg.conf but I do have the same problem with KDE4.2. Anyway, I removed it from my install; my 8 GB hard drive is a bit tight...

Re: KDE 4.2 Crashes

Instead of removing it, try setting it to "False" - Komuso, try adding it to your xorg.conf.

Re: KDE 4.2 Crashes

Hi all,

Your problem was not mine. By digging in the logfiles, I realised that the following setup in /etc/fstab where causing the problem:

none                   /var/log      tmpfs     defaults,size=10M   0      0
none                   /var/tmp      tmpfs     defaults,size=70M   0      0
none                   /var/tmp      tmpfs     defaults,size=20M   0      0

Comenting them out solved my problem.

Hope this help,
