I read about this today; even though I don't use Qt (just never installed it), it is nice to see it being developed since I probably will use it some day. I couldn't seem to find any screenshots or anything, I thought surely the video they made called "This is Qt 4.5" would have some screenshots

Have a look at www.kde-apps.org and you'll get plenty of screenshots of Qt powered software.

Thanks! Most apps seem to look different, depending on which style/theme one uses, kind of like GTK.
P.S. I feel honored, that being your first post

Will Arch update Qt 4.5 and use it with KDE 4.2 or will they wait for KDE 4.3?
cant wait to have Qt 4.5 looks very promising

@ MazurMe: Is it faster? Is it more stable? ...
I installed QT 4.5 from kdemod-testing, and it works well with KDE 4.2.1 from kdemod-core. And the tray bar icons are fixed now I dont see any speed gain, but my machine is pretty decent, so this would need some more testing, but I dont care
There is one funny problem: the icons in the quickstart plasmoid disappear sometimes, but when howering with the mouse over them, they reappear. But the funtionality is there, so it just looks wrong. Otherwise, I dont have any problems with themes or plasmoids, the yawp-weather-plasmoid for example is much more stable now.

The same here, I don't see anything faster. I think it will became faster with 4.3 because it will be patched. Or I am wrong?

I had some strange problems: opening a program sometimes closed all other windows. So I reverted back to QT 4.4 and all is ok again.
UPDATE sometimes there was no sound with QT 4.5.

Does this fix the issue with pidgin crashing in KDE 4.2? I thought it was something to do with the systray + rgba visuals
That is the only reason why I'm currently not using KDE right now

QT 4.5 is in testing now

I see from http://www.internetnews.com/dev-news/ar … atment.htm that now Qt is under the control of Nokia, v4.5 is being released under LGPL rather than GPL. This means that it will be available for use in proprietary closed source applications. I don't know much about the legalities of open source licensing, but from the little that I do know, am I right to be concerned over the future of KDE? Will it make any difference to KDE, or will we just see the result of lots of Qt based development popping up on mobile devices etc. without anything being given back to the community?

There is nothing to worry about; Qt has been releasing their software under both a commercial and GPL license for some time, and, beginning with 4.5.0, decided to release it under the terms of the LGPL as well. Developers are allowed the option to which of the licenses they wish to adhere (each has benefits and detriments, but I tend to favor the GPL for some reason), so KDE will remain free to develop the excellent software for which it is so famous.
We may very well see more proprietary, Qt-based applications come into existence, but the developers of such applications would be using another toolkit if Qt didn't support a licensing scheme acceptable to them, anyway. By using Qt, not only will proprietary developers benefit from open-source software and see how effective it is in stimulating creativity and productivity, but we too will benefit in that they will report bugs, suggest improvements, and overall increase Qt's userbase. Also, many of Qt's employees use KDE [by choice], so I don't foresee KDE having licensing issues any time soon.

The only difference between GPL and LGPL is that with the latter you can have free software apps/libs (more often the latter) used in proprietary software. You still can't distribute modified free software as proprietary - you can only include it linked in, and even then you must still offer to give the source for the free software app/lib components.
In fact, GTK AFAIK is also LGPL. Some things make more sense to be GPL'd (incentive for app devs to GPL their apps, so they can use GPL libs in them), and some make more sense to be LGPL'd (libs you want to spread regardless, widget toolkits are a good example). Some even make more sense as BSD (Stallman pushed for Vorbis to be BSD-licensed to help combat proprietary (and suckish in comparison) MP3).
I wouldn't be worried at all about Qt or KDE. In fact, there's even this, although it means little since Qt became free software and now LGPL: http://www.kde.org/whatiskde/kdefreeqtfoundation.php
