Problems installing xmonad

I installed xmonad with

pacman -S xmonad

and added

exec xmonad

into my .xinitrc.
When I start X, I see only black screen with X cursor. I read, that it's normal xmonad's behaviour and user need to press Alt+Shift+Return to start a terminal or Alt+Shift+Q to exit xmonad, but that doesn't work on my installation, when I press them nothing happens.
.xmonad/xmonad.errors contains only

on the commandline:
Warning: -no-recomp is deprecated: Use -fforce-recomp instead

Where can the problem be?

Re: Problems installing xmonad

I take it you copied the default config file provided with the install to ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs   ??
