No sound with phonon, VLC, or mplayer. No error message.

I'm running kdemod 4.2 on arch64. I was out of town for abut a week, but before I left my sound worked fine. I got back, booted the computer, and updated... now I have nothing. I'm not sure if it worked before the update since I didn't try. mplayer (as user or root) gives the error, "Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy".

VLC gives no error, but acts like it's playing. Phonon apps amarok2 and dragon player do the same thing. The sound test in System Settings doesn't work, but gives no error. All channels are unmuted on alsamixer and I'm a member of the audio group.

bash-3.2# lspci | grep audio
00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies Inc. VT1720/24 [Envy24PT/HT] PCI Multi-Channel Audio Controller (rev 01)
bash-3.2# groups eqisow
disk wheel video audio optical floppy storage power dbus hal users

I'm stumped on this one. sad

Edit:

I think the mplayer error may just be related to phonon locking the audio hardware, since mplayer uses jack. I'm not sure how to test that. I guess I can test that by trying mplayer w/o kde running? Trying to set Jack as default in System Settings reports that it 'does not work'. Testing 'Chaintech AV-710 (ICE1724)' or 'Chaintech AV-710 (IEC1724 IEC968' results in System Settings freezing.

I also noticed that the kdemod version of phonon was replaced by a newer extra version of phonon. Going back to the kdemod phonon didn't resolve the issue.

I've also tried removing .xine, .kde, .kde4, and .kderc from my home directory.

Edit:

ctrl+alt+f1
init 3
mplayer test.mp3

Same error as from inside KDE. sad

Check with lsof if any other process is using /dev/dsp.

Re: No sound with phonon, VLC, or mplayer. No error message.

#lsof /dev/dsp
#lsof /dev/sound/dsp

No return on either command.

I changed mplayer to use ALSA instead of OSS emulation and the error goes away, but there is still no sound.

Starting playback...
A: 0.0 (00.0) of 504.0 (08:24.0) ??,?%

It freezes right there without advancing.

Edit:

The kdemod update to 4.2.1 this morning didn't affect anything, not that I thought it would.

On the plus side, System Settings doesn't seem to be crashing any more. Must not have been related to the sound issue.

Re: No sound with phonon, VLC, or mplayer. No error message.

My computer lost sound on my most recent update, as well.  I checked with Puppy Live CD and my sound card was fine , so had to be something with my arch configs.  checked alsamixer and it said it was using PC speaker, not Riptide soundcard.  checked wiki and it said to add line to etc/modconf.d to add pc speaker last (index=2), sound works normal now. Hope it helps.
