sound driver kills mplayer video

I've got a new'ish good spec PC with dual nvidia 8600 video cards and ever since I built it mplayer has refused to play video, the window appears and sound is fine but the video never plays and I get the "Your system is too SLOW to play this!" error.

I assumed that this was something to do with the nvidia drivers as I had problems with them at the start and I've seen others complain about the linux implementation, especially for the 8600. Using vlc the video plays fine so I just dropped mplayer but today I decided to go back and see if I could find out why.

I looked at the suggestions that go with the error message and thought I'd try the -ao sdl flag even though sound works fine. As soon as I set this video started working.

A couple of questions then:
Why does the video break because of the sound driver? Surely the sound should die and the video keep working

Even though video works it gets jittery when I move the mouse around a lot or cause other areas of the screen to be redrawn. I see a lot of messages like this on the command line:

pts value <= previous:  0.229 ct: -0.040   0/  0 50% 18%  1.9% 254 0 47%
[h264 @ 0x89eb640]concealing 3150 DC, 3150 AC, 3150 MV errors% 255 0 49%
pts value <= previous
pts value <= previous:  0.184 ct: -0.042   0/  0 50% 18%  1.9% 256 0 49%

If I use -nosound then this problem goes away so I assume that I'm still having sound issues. What is the best way to tune the sound so that I get good sound and working video?
