I'm using Arch and currently open a terminal and run a script when I log in. I don't mind it, but I'm currently in the process of ironing out _everything_ I consider unnatractive, having to run a script and wait until it is done to then exit the terminal is unnatractive.

Let me see if I'm understanding this. You're starting Arch then running a script to connect to the network? If so, check out netcfg:

I've been using wifi-radar for a long time when i want a gui and it works fine, I see most people using wicd though.

still love the wicd...

archassistant.. it is not "only" for wireless managing, but it's great for any DE.

If you're trying to streamline completely, you may not necessarily need a GUI (although I've heard good things about wicd, and from my limited use of it, it's pretty nice). Maybe set up net-auto in rc.conf or netcfg-auto-wireless (I haven't actually tried this yet)? I've been using Awesome on my laptop lately, and manipulating a touchpad is just annoying.

Have the script exit after completion of the login.

Hi. I'm new. I have a similar question to this one. I have been trying to get wicd to load onto the tray of pypanel, perlpanel, or docker in WindowMaker. I just can't get it to work. mostly people say that just having wicd load as a daemon will put it in a system tray, but it is and there's nothing in a system tray.

Running the daemon won't make it automatically show up in the tray, you need to run the wicd executable

unless you want it to autostart, which means you have to add it to the autostarted apps in your DE or wm

I think you need to start "wicd-client" to get the systray icon/client interface.

I have done that many times, but just now, I thought of running wicd-client as super-user, and I think that I've figured out what's wrong. can anyone identify this error message for me - http://i43.tinypic.com/vhw8yc.png
it appears to be a python issue. Python in general has been by-and-large rather glitchy for me (pypanel, for example), so maybe it's some sort of incompatibility. perhaps I should download Python 2.5? any ideas would be appreciated, concrete knowledge even more so.

nevermind. I just fixed it myself. needed dbus to be running. now it works like a charm

+1 For Archassistant.
Edit:
If you use just a network, I tink the best is to add ' sudo netcfg2 network_name '
to the autostart apps of your WM/DE or /etc/rc.local

For anyone else who comes across this page I'd like to add my support for wicd as an excellent utility. More distros should use it as the default on live CD's.
I used WI-Fi Radar on Wolvix and then later on Arch for well over a year and thought it was good. But after setting up Arch on my new laptop and trying out a few other network tools I found wicd to be the very best by far, much better than wifi-radar. It is incredibly simple to use, but with many advanced options available and is able to handle all the networks & encryption types I've come across so far without any problem (WPA was a pain with wifi-radar)

I will look into netcfg later, but right now im using wicd and is giving me this errors... maybe im not the only one

Yeah, that is an annoying problem; I think it happens when your python isn't installed correctly or something.
I can't remember what I did, but I had to remove a python/wicd directory or two before I could reinstall and have it working again

wicd I strongly recommend it, you don't need to do many things to make it work correctly, I wish there were a similar version for kde.
And for the problem you mention
wicd-client -n
Look at the wiki section http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wicd
