Upgraded x86-64 ext4 system with:
e2fsprogs hdparm libidn openjdk6 run-parts wxgtk
Reboot and plasma crashes with white screen.
Attempted to remove kde and re-install. After re-install, same plasma crash with white screen.

Note during the boot process for this ext4 system x86-64 ; use of ext3 during the boot. Is this correct?
When I examine the drives partitions in FaunOS (as usb device), I assume I will not be able to display ext4 partition datas, which seems to be the case.
I wonder how to troubleshoot ext4 if this is the case when using ext3 system boots for troubleshooting.

Is your problem in any way related to this?
Bug 186124 – plasma crashes on startup with different resolution: KDE bug
Plasma 4.2.1 crashes with changing resolutions: KDEmod thread about it
It crashes on me every time I start KDE, krandr tray sets my external LCD screen to 1280x1024 and crashes Plasma

I reviewed the posted bugs but do not have the same problem AFAICT.
The problem occured following an upgrade of the noted packages but does not seem related to them.
My display turns white and I have no out except to go to a terminal. Dmesg reports plasma crashes with error 4.
Neopmuk is also part of the crash statement with a reference to libQtCore.so.4.4.3 error 4.
I know next to nada about plasma or neopmuk.
I am not using kdemod...full kde4.
It never shows up.
I have a back-up system which I don't want to upgrade due to this plasma crash.
I have a good ext4 system running with kde4 also but hesitate to upgrade for the same plasma problem area.
Not having much success with kde4...have a problem with akonadi as well which extends my boot time to more than 2 minutes due to server searches and failure to find needed files for akonadi.
Google search doesn't cover my failure problem.

I have what is probably the same bug. Since last week I can have my laptop running as a laptop but as soon as I dock it (with dual external monitors), I get the plasma crash. If I reconfigure to get it working on the monitors it'll crash as soon as I use it undocked.
KDE4 has been a dog since inception. 4.2.1 is supposed to be the "cream" release.. So far it's the "use gnome' release. Getting really fed up with the constant bugs.
Cheers,
Arkay.

I had the same problem, and I fixed it by removing the KDE user config files:
cd ~
rm -r .kde .kde4
Just some side note:
It is unfortunate to prematurely remove such stuff. Renaming to some backup directory keeps the chance to easily get some setup back. Just in case.
This is what I usually do:
cd ~
mv .kde .kde-old
mv .kde4 .kde4-old
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

I'm getting the same -- every time I log in after I've used my 22" external monitor (it's a laptop). Anyhow - I've resolved it by entering normal X and removing the following files in /home/johnm/.kde4/share/config
* plasma-appletsrc
* plasmarc
Renter KDE4 and manually changing resolution on the 22" and everything works fine ... until next login ...
EDIT: removing either .kde and .kde4 (or both) didn't work out for me ...

A word of caution too. Don't try to overwrite .kde4 or delete it then say mv a .kde4.old to .kde4 if kde is running. Probably even if kdm is running. KDE seems to keep .kde4 open and you can easily hose your system by copying things in/out. Deleting and/or renaming the plasma files seems ok but moving the whole dir can cause problems. I crashed the whole ext3 partition by doing it.
I ended up configuring an openbox desktop for laptop use for now. Hope they get this bug sorted soon. KDE4 has been almost there for so long.

Arkay.

Is your whole system fully up to date? The error implies that you have qt 4.3.3 but qt 4.4.3 is in [extra] and the svn shows it was updated in January.

ghosthack;
Thanks for reply....
As posted, system up to date even upgraded yesterday.
Qt 4.4.3-5 installed and also qt3 .3..3.8-9 installed.
Is there a problem there?

If you have qt-4.4.3 then I would expect the libQtCore.so shared binary to be called libQtCore.so.4.4.3 not libQtCore.so.4.3.3.
What do you see if you do a 'ls -l /usr/lib/libQtCore*' ?

Hi everyone,
Anything new on this bug (plasma crashing whenever we switch from an external monitor to a laptop monitor - different resolutions) ? It's really annoying and a very serious showstopper in terms of user experience.
Do you know if the issue was fixed and how can i update my KDE 4.2 ?
Thanks,

Isn't this fixed with 4.2.2?
Offline
no ideea
Do you have this problem ? I have a standard KDE 4.2.1 installation, so no KDEMOD from the regular repository.
Offline
I think after upgrade to:
pacman -Qs kdebase
local/kdebase 4.2.2-1 (kde)
KDE Base Applications
local/kdebase-runtime 4.2.2-1 (kde)
KDE Base Runtime Environment
local/kdebase-workspace 4.2.2-1 (kde)
KDE Base Workspace
it seems to work fine
Offline
Good to know. 4.2.2 is currently in [testing] but will be moved to extra the next days.
Offline
Hi Pierre,
Thanks for the info - is good to know.
I will wait and upgrade after the packages will hit "extra"
Cheers

Hmmm. Just upgraded kde from testing and there's an improvement.
Now instead of me getting a plasma crash with associated sigsev dialog it just crashed to a black screen with no dialog. (Must be a Microsoft fix)
Still. I'll wait till work tomorrow and rename my plasma.rc etc and see if it's something in the current config causing it. Maybe re-setting up my desktop for the 962'nd time since kde4's introduction might be the charm.
Cheers,
Arkay.

Hi Arkay,
Goodone
One thing - can you tell how did you upgrade with the packages from "testing" ?; i enabled "testing" in my pacman.conf but i couldn't find any KDE 4.2.2 package; what mirror are you using ?
As for the bug - no comment - i hope the KDE devs are looking seriously into all these bugs..
Rgds,
