Oh, boy, he nailed me ...
ubuntu is the distro I would prefer ... if arch wasn't better. Never say goodbye, you named it!
ubuntu using pacman would be nice (i mean having repos on the server and being able to -Suy to the newest things) ... going to the website of ubuntu, i didn't find their package-list anywhere and also did not found a link to download only individual pkgs

The Synaptic Package Manager is basically a gui version of pacman, you can do a global update (just like pacman -Syu) or search for individual packages in there. In addition to the Ubuntu-official packages, you have access to all debian packages by editing the Synaptic config.
It's not bad, but I'm having a bit more fun with arch at the moment.

Nah, it is just apt-get. Not pacman. Apt will tell you about a conflict, and leave you allone - but it is better then rpm. Worse then pacman.

I would go with Ubuntu, it's very nice. Worked percect out of the box. I haven't had much luck with Mandrake/Suse, but Ubuntu was very nice.

I just wanted to say: No, thanks for your offer reading your thoughts, but my own thoughts are heavy enough for me. Beg your pardon, don't wanted to offend you.

didn't offend me ... i said "you read my thoughts", because you actually posted exactly what i had in mind ... reading my thoughts is some times very difficult to me myself, so i think others even have more trouble doing so

Actually, I think that is 6 words. With I've being a contraction for "I have"..
"I have four words for you." is indeed 6 words...
you should say, "I have six words for you."..then you would be right.

Well, I recently tried out Ubuntu and it's great if you want a business desktop. Was a no brainer install with Hoary BUT where it really let me down is trying to install Nvidia drivers on it. It just didn't want to work.
I still prefer Arch in that it is very simple in it's administration and Pacman is a great package management tool. I can only hope that it stays true to it's roots as it grows with an ever expanding user base.
