[Solved] Disabling/Information on automatic file backups ending with ~

I've noticed that whenever I edit a text file, the old version still remains as a hidden file called "XX.txt~".  The properties says: backup file (application/x-trash).   Any info on what this is/how to disable it would be appreciated.

gedit...woops, i'm an idiot....it's an option to turn off automatic backups.
