Dell Inspiron 1525 - Sound and Xorg Conf

Hey everyone, hope I'm posting this in the right forum.

I have my arch install on an Inspiron 1525 as the title states. I have Xorg and OSS installed on it currently. I need to know two things:

1. I consulted the Arch Wiki for the laptop and it suggests that OSS provides louder and better sound than ALSA. Is this a confirmed thing, and if so is there anything special with OSS that I have to do to get sound nice and loud? This is a biggie because the speakers in their current state put out fairly low sound. I was hoping this could be improved.

2. Under Xorg, I have the drivers installed correctly and everything. I plan on using input hotplugging so devices aren't that big an issue. What I'd like to know is how to setup the conf with the monitor and intel integrated graphics that come with the laptop. This is more me just being confused with Xorg than anything else, though if anyone has a good sample Xorg conf for this laptop that I could use, I would greatly appreciate it.

Any other issues with the laptop that would be good to know are welcome as well. Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't know is there any sound loudness improvement when using OSS, but I would suggest you to use ALSA. I have a similar laptop (Inspiron 1300) so my xorg.conf may be useful to you, but you will need to change some lines to match your graphic card.:)

Thanks for the conf file, very appreciated. As for OSS vs. ALSA, I'll probably just end up testing both and see which one produces louder sound, though I'm curious why your recommend ALSA over OSS? Also I'm curious what the purpose of that huge modeline array is, if you happen to know. Sorry for the large amount of questions.

Well... I never tried alsa on my Notebook (I'm the one who wrote in the wiki that with OSS you get louder sound.)
About advantages of OSS - you get the builtin microphone working "out of the box": Just set in ossxmix rec1-mux, rec2-mux and rec3-mux to dig-mic1. Also no matter what sound card I'm using I always find OSS to produce better sound quality.
About disadvantages of OSS - I haven't found a way to get both headphone jacks working (but that's a problem that persists with ALSA) and also OSS4 doesn't support suspend - you have to stop OSS before suspend and restart it after resuming.

Xorg - you don't need config It'd probably work out of the box. I'd suggest you use xorg from testing as it provides major performance boost (over four times the performance current xorg in extra offers).

Ah I was hoping to get one of the wiki writers. I'll give the Xorg from testing a go then, see how it works out. Thanks for the conf, it looks MUCH cleaner than the one HWD spits out. Any issues with the testing version I should be aware of or is it fairly safe (at least as safe as something labeled testing is gonna get I suppose)?

Well... I'm using a self compiled xorg-server 1.6 last's RC and the other packages which are supposed to be much more unstable than the current ones in testing, yet I find no problems. You shouldn't encounter any problems at all.

SoI have Xorg working and I'm now in the process of setting up my Openbox looks and stuff. One thing I really need to know is how you set up suspend to disk, suspend to ram, shutdown, and reboot properly on the laptop. Is shutdown and reboot just the basic commands for that or do I need to do anything else cause I don't want to risk losing work. As for suspend, I have it working... kind of. I'm trying s2ram and the only way I get it to go is via the command:

sudo s2ram -f

Is there a better way that that, cause trying to issue that command from an Openbox keybind causes the laptop to lock up and then I have to manually restart it. I figure I should ask you since you have the laptop set up properly already.

Aye, thanks for the wiki page. Just out of curiosity, would you recommend the x86x64 version of arch over the i686? Is there any noticeable benefit to using it? Are there any major drawbacks/problems?

You'll get noticeble benefits only if you're doing some heavy video processing stuff, large databases or other similar things. Some people report that a x86_64 system is more responsive under high load, but I heven't tested this to see the difference.
Drawbacks? Considering flash and java for x86_64 got released there are hardly any drawbacks... However if you're using wine you'll still need to setup a 32bit chroot or use the lib32-* approach.
I'd recommend you got for x86_64 since that is teh_future...
