im pretty sure its not possible, but i can't find a definite answe, so im asking. i set up an old machine with 3 drives configured as LVM. i want to know, if i put together something a little newer, if i can plug those 3 drives in and maybe they'll be detected as they were, or if i have to start over?
if i have to start over, whats teh best course of action, since theres 400gb of data on the 800gb LVM

I don't see why it wouldn't just work. You just need to make sure you install them in the right order so that /boot is on the same disk.

so whatever data on teh drives themselves is marked as well, so i can drop just the LVM drives in a new system and do a clean install on a different drive of course, and it should redetect and remap the other 3 lvm drives the same way?

yes... knowing myself i'd probably install the OS first and then plug in the LVM drives ![]()
EDIT: unless those 3 drives are one small part of a huge logical volume, spanning those 3 drives and more drives. I think that might screw things up a bit

i'll try to provide a few more details i guess on teh systems in question.
the system with the LVM is as follows. i built it to toy around with LVM, there was data on teh drives before, so i added them 1 by 1 while transferring the data from each drive to the ones already added to the LVM, did i say that right? anyway, the data on the drives was old data i wanted to sort through, and dispose of what i didn't need anymore, and transfer the rest to the appropriate places on my other file server that shares media for access around the house
asus a7v (chose the board because it had a second promise IDEcontroller, so the onboard IDE has the system drive (10gb), promise controller has two of the LVM drives, each 320gb)
athlon 1200
512mb ram
geforce 2
PCI promise ide controller with third 200gb drive in LVM volume
the main reason i want to switch it over, is i keep having problems with smbnetfs, i start transferring files, and it craps out, and i have to restart the smbnetfs deamon, and then large file transfers fail again.......this normally would have been fine since i have a 32gb usb key, but the system doesnt have usb2, so its not very helpful.
so now i want to carry over the 3 LVM drives to an athlon 64 3700 system, that im currently installing arch on, it has 1gb of ram, so i can slap KDE on there and it can handle the samba share access hopefully better than smbnetfs. maybe i should have made such a funky setup to begin with, but it was meant to be more of a toy, something to learn, or gain a little experience with
then maybe i can slap my voodoo 5 or geforce 3 in the old box and use it for some retro gaming ![]()
