Compiz on X64 crashes [SOLVED]

Hello I would like to get some help regarding installing Compiz on X64, I tried installing it before but it kinda crashes or something. I can't see any borders around windows and I can't move or resize any windows and all quick commands on the keyboard dissapeared.

Im kinda new to the whole linux thing but I really want to install Compiz and I've been through the guides regarding settings and so on.
I also checked that the boxes for moving, resizing etc was checked and it was.

Is there anyone but me that has come across this problem?
Btw im using a Nvidia Geforce 8600GT if that is relavent.
If you need more info from me just tell me and I will get it.

Re: Compiz on X64 crashes [SOLVED]

Have you installed compiz-manager?  I had problems with settings (keyboard shortcuts and the like) before I did.

If you have the compiz-fusion icon in the system tray you could possibly reload it from there if something crashes... otherwise I think you'll need to post some more detailed information to diagnose the problem.

Try running "fusion-icon" in a terminal window and observing the output.

Also, running "metacity --replace" should get your desktop back to a functional state if the compiz stuff fails.

Re: Compiz on X64 crashes [SOLVED]

Yes I have the compiz manager installed on the system but I cant find anything to change that will bring the borders or anything else back either.
I dont have the fusion icon, because I just installed the usual compiz.
The things I have done is:

1. Installed compiz-core, compiz-decorator-gtk and compiz-manager
2. Added compiz --replace --use-cow gconf and gtk-window-decorator --replace to sessions so that it will run on startup.

I guess there could be something more to do but I dont have a clue what?
Isnt there anything to config in the xorg or something?
Btw Im sorry im not that detailed on the description, but I am now using Gnome as desktop and Metacity as WM.

Here is a screenshot so you can maybe get a bigger picture of my problem.

screenxlf.th.png

As you can see on the picture there is no buttons for closing och minimizing windows etc, the windows are also locked to the desktop so they cant be moved or resized.

PS. The topic can be missleading, I wrote "crashes" beacause I think it is crashed because of how it is.
It could absolutely be another reason to my problem.
DS.

Re: Compiz on X64 crashes [SOLVED]

Hi!
You should check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf  ..There is a section screen, Default depth should be 24. That corrected all my problems with no borders windows!
And if you want to start fusion in gnome(not only from console), please install fusion-icon too.

also you really have to have emerald installed too.. smile

Use fusion-icon to start Compiz if possible smile It handles all the trouble of replacing Metacity and starting Emerald. The latter is what's not happening for you. I think our Wiki pages on Compiz, etc. might have info too.

Oh, I see.  You literally just installed "compiz", not "compiz-fusion" - which is what you probably want.

Look here:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Compiz_Fusion

Install compiz fusion according to the instructions here.  This will get you fusion-icon, as well as emerald (which is what draws those window borders.)

EDIT:  Yeah, look at the first section on the Compiz wiki page if you don't believe me tongue  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Com … this_first

Re: Compiz on X64 crashes [SOLVED]

If sticking with compiz and the gtk window decorator then another item to check is that the window decorations plugin is actually enabled.  Run gconf-editor, go to apps > compiz > general > allscreens > options and confirm that "decoration" is in the active_plugins list (this has caught me out before!)
