sudo shutdown -h -t now or sudo halt have inconsistent results

Basically, shutdown whether I use 'sudo shutdown -h -t now' or 'sudo halt' have inconsistent results on my system. About 1/2 the time the box will power down correctly. The other 1/2 of the time it goes down but simply restarts. Hardware: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, Athlon XP 3200+, 2×512 meg, Nvidia 8400GS 512 meg onbaord (PCI).

Glad to post any logs you guys wanna see.

I don't have a proper answer but...

Shutdown and Halt do slightly different things, have a browse of the man pages to see what they do man 8 shutdown or man 8 halt.

Why not use poweroff?

poweroff is just a symlink to halt

halt  executes either shutdown -h or shutdown -r depending on the name you used to run it
