When I try to mount an unmounted volume as a non-root user in PCManFM, I get two completely blank popups, followed by one saying "Directory doesn't exist!" and the volume fails to mount. No "permission denied" stuff, no "wrong FS type", just the two blank windows and the missing directory message.
Rather strange, given that automount worked fine in Gnome earlier today...

I had the same issue. I resolved it by applying the fix here. Permission Denied with automounter

I tried that, still doesn't work...

That blank error messages are a known bug in pcmanfm, and it seems that no one actually fixes bugs at the project right now. As I guess you already know, it is telling you that:

The Policy kit stuff from MarCustomized post should work. Did you remember to change $USER to your user name?

Open /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf and replace the content with:
<?xml version="1.0″ encoding="UTF-8″?> <!– -*- XML -*- –>
<!DOCTYPE pkconfig PUBLIC "-//freedesktop//DTD PolicyKit Configuration 1.0//EN"
"http://hal.freedesktop.org/releases/PolicyKit/1.0/config.dtd">

Thanks, xd-0 - that did the trick for me.

Nothing works for me. I've tried every fix in every thread and I -still- get a window that says "permission denied". That's all it says. Nothing more.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.
